CCSP vs CISSP: which ISC2 certification first?

CISSP is ISC2’s broad security credential, spanning eight domains from risk management to software security, while CCSP goes deep on one area — securing cloud services — across six cloud-specific domains. Both are professional-level certifications that require five years of experience, and both use ISC2’s adaptive exam format, so the difference is scope rather than difficulty tier. For most people the order is CISSP first, then CCSP: an active CISSP satisfies the entire CCSP experience requirement, and the CISSP’s breadth is what most security leadership roles ask for. The exception is someone whose work is already almost entirely cloud security, for whom the CCSP describes the job more precisely. This article sets out how the two differ and how to choose.

Breadth versus depth

The CISSP covers security as a whole: security and risk management, asset security, security architecture and engineering, communication and network security, identity and access management, security assessment and testing, security operations, and software development security. It is designed to show that you can make and defend security decisions across an organisation, which is why it is so often listed for security manager, architect and leadership roles.

The CCSP takes the same professional standard and applies it to cloud services: cloud concepts, architecture and design; cloud data security; cloud platform and infrastructure security; cloud application security; cloud security operations; and legal, risk and compliance. Its questions turn on things the CISSP touches only lightly — which party is responsible under each service model, how to protect data across its lifecycle in someone else’s infrastructure, how to assess a provider and read its audit reports, and how jurisdiction and contracts change what you are allowed to do.

The experience requirements, side by side

Both ask for five years of cumulative, full-time experience, but they count it differently. The CISSP wants five years in two or more of its eight domains. The CCSP wants five years in information technology, of which three must be in cybersecurity and one in one or more of the six CCSP domains.

Each allows one year to be waived — by a relevant degree, or by an approved credential (for the CCSP, the Cloud Security Alliance’s CCSK) — and only one year in total. The detail that shapes the order is this: an active CISSP satisfies the entire CCSP experience requirement on its own. There is no equivalent in the other direction.

Neither certification makes you wait to sit the exam. Pass without the experience and you become an Associate of ISC2, with six years to earn it before the full credential is awarded. Our guide to the CCSP experience requirements covers the substitutions and the Associate route in more detail.

How the exams compare

The two exams are built the same way. ISC2 delivers both as computerized adaptive tests: the exam adjusts to your answers, the number of questions varies within a range, and you cannot go back to change an earlier answer. Both mix standard multiple choice with advanced item types, and both are scored on a scaled basis.

The difference is in what the questions reward. CISSP questions are famously framed from a manager’s or adviser’s viewpoint — the “best” answer is usually the one that addresses risk and governance before the technical fix. CCSP questions apply the same mindset to cloud situations, and they expect more specific knowledge of cloud service models, data protection techniques and the legal side of using a provider.

Which to take first

For most security professionals the order follows from the experience rules:

  1. Take the CISSP first if your career is aimed at security architecture, management or leadership broadly. It is the more widely requested credential, and holding it clears the CCSP experience requirement in one step.
  2. Take the CCSP first if your work is already concentrated on securing cloud services — cloud security engineering, cloud architecture with a security remit, or assessing cloud providers — and you want the credential that names that work.
  3. Add the other one later if your role spans both: a CISSP holder moving into cloud work adds the CCSP; a CCSP holder moving into broader leadership adds the CISSP.
  4. If you are not yet working in security, take neither yet. ISC2’s entry-level Certified in Cybersecurity (CC) has no experience requirement and teaches the vocabulary both professional exams assume.

A change coming to the CISSP

ISC2 has announced that the CISSP exam moves to a new exam outline on 15 April 2027. If you plan to sit the CISSP around that date, check which outline your exam will follow and study to that one. The CCSP outline is not affected by that change.

Questions, answered

Neither is a higher tier: both are ISC2 professional certifications with a five-year experience requirement and the same adaptive exam format. CISSP is broader, across eight domains of security; CCSP is narrower but more specific, across six cloud-security domains. Which feels harder depends on your background — cloud specialists usually find the CCSP more familiar, generalists the CISSP.
