What a good practice-question explanation looks like
A good practice-question explanation tells you why the correct answer is correct and why each incorrect option is incorrect. That second half is where almost all the learning is, and it is the half most practice platforms leave out — which is why candidates can work through thousands of questions and still meet an unfamiliar phrasing of the same concept in the exam and guess. Explanations are the part of a question bank that actually teaches; the questions themselves only diagnose. This article sets out what separates an explanation that transfers from one that does not, and how to use them.
Three tiers of explanation, and only one of them teaches
The weakest tier is an answer key: the correct letter, and nothing else. It tells you that you were wrong without telling you why, which leaves you to reverse-engineer the reasoning or, far more commonly, to memorise the pairing of that stem with that letter. Memorising stem-to-letter pairings feels like progress and is close to worthless, because the exam will reword the stem.
The middle tier explains the correct answer. This is genuinely useful and it is where most platforms stop. Its limitation is that exam questions are not built around one obviously right option — they are built around several plausible ones, and the skill being tested is discrimination. An explanation that only justifies the winner leaves the discrimination unexplained.
The strongest tier explains every option: why the correct one is correct, and why each of the others fails. That is the tier that transfers, because the reason a plausible option fails is usually a concept boundary — the exact boundary the exam is probing, and the one you will meet again in a different costume.
The distractors carry the information
Wrong options in a well-written exam question are not random. They are the neighbouring service, the answer that would be right under a different constraint, the approach that works but costs more, or the one that solves an adjacent problem. Each one is there because real candidates genuinely confuse it with the right answer.
That makes the set of distractors a map of the misconceptions the examiners expect. An explanation that walks through them is handing you that map. When you understand why the plausible-but-wrong option is wrong — not that it is wrong, but the specific property that disqualifies it — you have learned a boundary rather than a fact, and boundaries survive rewording.
What a complete explanation contains
Four things, and they do different jobs. The underlying concept, stated independently of this particular question, so you can attach it to the rest of what you know. The reasoning for the correct answer, tied to the specific constraint in the stem — usually the qualifier, the "most cost-effective" or "least operational overhead" that is doing the real work. The disqualifying property of each other option. And a one-line takeaway you could carry into the exam room.
Notice that none of those is a restatement of the stem. An explanation that opens by paraphrasing the question is padding, and it is a reliable signal that nobody with subject knowledge wrote it.
Red flags worth recognising
Circular reasoning is the most common: "Option C is correct because C is the best solution for this scenario." That sentence contains no information. Its cousin is the explanation that simply describes what the correct service does, without ever connecting that description to the constraint that ruled the others out.
Other tells: explanations that exist only on the correct option; explanations of identical length on every question, which suggests a template rather than a thought; references to service behaviour that has since changed, with no indication of when the question was last reviewed; and explanations that contradict the vendor’s own documentation. On that last one, the documentation wins — and a bank whose explanations disagree with it is not a bank to trust on the questions you cannot check.
How to actually study from them
Read the explanation on the questions you got right. This is the single highest-value habit available in practice, and almost nobody does it, because getting one right feels like a closed matter. It is not: a correct guess and confident knowledge produce the same tick, and the only way to tell them apart is to check whether your reasoning matches the explanation’s. If it does not, you got lucky, and luck does not repeat reliably across a full paper.
Then compress. After reading an explanation, write the boundary in your own words in one sentence — "X when the constraint is cost, Y when it is latency". If you cannot write that sentence, you have read the explanation without absorbing it, and the honest move is to go back to the underlying material rather than on to the next question. Explanations are worth more slowly than questions are worth quickly.
