How many practice questions do you need before the exam?
There is no number of practice questions that makes you ready. What predicts readiness is stable first-attempt accuracy on questions you have never seen, spread across every domain the exam weights — and that can arrive after a few hundred questions or take a few thousand, depending entirely on how much you knew when you started. The count is the most advertised number in exam preparation and one of the least informative, because it measures the size of a bank rather than the state of your knowledge. This article explains what a large question bank genuinely buys you, what it does not, and the signal to watch instead.
Why every practice site leads with a number
Question counts are advertised everywhere because they are the easiest thing about a practice platform to state, compare and inflate. A number is concrete where "quality" is not, it fits in a page title, and it gives a buyer something to weigh against a price. Scan the search results for any certification and you will find banks announced in the hundreds and the thousands, positioned as though the larger figure were straightforwardly better.
It is a proxy, and like most proxies it is gameable. A bank can be enlarged by rewording the same stem several ways, by keeping questions about services that have been superseded, or by padding the easy end of the difficulty range where questions are cheapest to write. None of that is visible from the number, and all of it inflates it.
What a large bank genuinely buys you
There is a real benefit, and it is specific: unseen questions. The second time you meet a question you are no longer testing whether you understand the concept — you are testing whether you remember the answer, and those two things feel identical from the inside. That is the trap. Your accuracy climbs, your confidence climbs with it, and neither movement reflects new knowledge.
So the bank needs to be large enough that you do not run out of fresh questions before your accuracy settles. That is the honest case for volume, and it is a threshold rather than a scale: past the point where you always have unseen material to draw on, additional thousands add very little.
What it does not buy you
Volume is not coverage. A bank of several thousand questions concentrated in the two domains that are easiest to write about is a worse preparation tool than a few hundred distributed according to the exam’s own weightings, because the exam will not grade you on the distribution the bank happened to have. Coverage is the property that matters, and it is not deducible from a total.
Volume is also not difficulty calibration. Exam questions are hard in a particular way — plausible alternatives separated by a qualifier like "most cost-effective" or "least operational overhead" — and a bank can be enormous while consisting largely of recall questions that the real exam does not ask. If your practice accuracy is far above your mock accuracy, that gap is usually the explanation.
The signal that actually predicts readiness
Watch first-attempt accuracy on unseen questions, and watch it per domain. First-attempt matters because a reviewed question is a remembered question. Per-domain matters because an aggregate hides exactly the thing that fails you: a comfortable overall score assembled from two strong domains and one weak one will meet a question paper that samples all of them.
The readiness signal is stability, not a peak. One strong session proves very little; the same accuracy holding across several sessions, on different material, with no domain trailing the others, is what a pass looks like in advance. Add a margin on top, because exam-room conditions reliably cost a few points that practice conditions do not.
How to tell a padded bank from a real one
Work through thirty or forty questions and look for the tells. Do stems repeat with cosmetic rewording? Do questions reference services or features that have been renamed or retired? Is every question mapped to a domain, and does the distribution across domains resemble the official blueprint? Is there an explanation on every option, or only on the correct one?
That last test is the most discriminating, because per-option explanations are expensive to write and cannot be generated by padding. A bank that explains why each wrong answer is wrong was built by someone who understood the material; a bank that only names the right answer may not have been.
A practical way to decide you have done enough
Stop asking how many you have answered and ask three questions instead. Have you seen questions from every domain in roughly the proportion the exam weights them? Is your first-attempt accuracy on fresh questions steady across recent sessions rather than trending on a single good day? Is your weakest domain close enough to your strongest that a bad sample cannot sink you?
When all three are true, sit a full-length timed paper under real conditions — no pausing, no looking things up — and treat that score as the decision. Practice questions build the knowledge; a timed full-length paper is the only thing that rehearses the exam. If the timed score clears your target with margin, book it. The number of questions it took you to get there is not a fact about the exam, and it is not worth comparing with anyone else’s.
