Solutions Architect Associate vs Professional
Take the Solutions Architect – Associate (SAA-C03) first unless you already design multi-account AWS environments for a living: it proves you can design a sound architecture for one workload, while the Professional (SAP-C03) proves you can design and evolve architectures across an organisation. AWS sets no prerequisite for the professional exam, but it recommends two or more years of hands-on experience designing on AWS, and the professional questions assume everything the associate exam tests. Passing SAP-C03 also renews the associate certification.

Start with SAA-C03 if…
- You design or build on AWS but have not yet owned architecture across several accounts or teams.
- You want the AWS credential employers ask for most in build roles, sooner.
- You are still learning how the core services (VPC, EC2, S3, RDS, DynamoDB, IAM) fit together and trade off against each other.
- You want an exam that tests one workload at a time, with shorter scenarios.
Go to SAP-C03 if…
- You already hold SAA-C03, or work at that level, and design for multiple accounts, teams or business units.
- Your work includes organisation-wide concerns: AWS Organizations, landing zones, hybrid connectivity, migration and modernisation.
- You want the credential that signals senior architecture experience, and that renews your associate certification when you pass it.
- You are comfortable reading long scenarios and choosing between several options that would all work.
What changes between the two levels
The associate exam asks you to design one solution well: secure, resilient, high-performing and cost-optimised. The professional exam widens the frame to an organisation. SAP-C03’s five domains cover cloud architecture design and implementation; security, compliance and governance; cost-optimised architecture; resilience, migration and business continuity; and operational excellence and automation, and their scenarios span many accounts, teams and existing systems rather than one new workload.
The questions change too. Professional scenarios are longer and carry more constraints at once, such as several accounts, a compliance requirement, a migration deadline and a cost ceiling, and more than one answer would work. The exam rewards picking the option that meets every constraint with the least effort or risk, which is why stamina and careful reading matter as much as service knowledge.
Do you need the associate first?
No. AWS has no prerequisites, so you can book SAP-C03 without holding SAA-C03. Most candidates still take the associate first, because the professional exam assumes all of it and then builds on it: if associate-level questions on VPC design, storage classes or database choice still slow you down, the professional scenarios will be much harder.
Taking the associate first also gives you a measured checkpoint. A comfortable associate pass followed by a year or more of design work is a sensible signal that you are ready to start professional preparation.
SAP-C03 replaces SAP-C02 on 17 November 2026
AWS uses SAP-C02 until 16 November 2026 and SAP-C03 from 17 November 2026. The new version adds Amazon Bedrock and AI agent architectures, splits out cost optimisation and operational excellence, and removes the AWS IoT services from scope. If you are starting professional preparation now, prepare for SAP-C03.
Which is worth more?
They signal different things. SAA-C03 is the broad, widely requested proof that you can design on AWS, and for most engineering roles it is the credential that gets asked for. SAP-C03 signals senior architecture experience across an organisation, which matters most for architect, principal engineer and consulting roles, and for AWS partners that need professional-level certified staff.
If your work does not yet involve multi-account or organisation-wide design, the professional certification is better taken later, when your day job gives you the experience its scenarios assume.
