How hard are AWS certifications, really? An honest look

AWS certifications range from approachable to genuinely hard, and the level tells you most of the story: the foundational Cloud Practitioner is passable by a committed beginner after a few weeks of structured study, the associate exams are a real step up that demand scenario reasoning across dozens of services, and the professional and specialty exams are legitimately difficult tests written for people with years of hands-on experience. What makes them hard is not trick questions or memorisation — it is breadth, AWS-specific vocabulary, and scenario questions that ask you to weigh trade-offs between plausible options. And “hard” is relative: the same associate exam is a stretch for a beginner and routine revision for an engineer who builds on AWS daily. Here is an honest calibration of the difficulty at each level, what the difficulty actually consists of, and how to know when you personally are ready.

Difficulty by level: the honest ladder

The certification tiers are an accurate difficulty ladder, because each level is designed against a different amount of assumed experience:

  • Foundational (Cloud Practitioner, CLF-C02) — approachable. It is the only AWS exam designed assuming no hands-on experience, and it tests broad conceptual understanding rather than technical depth. A few weeks of structured study is a realistic runway for a beginner. Approachable is not effortless: unprepared candidates fail it, because AWS vocabulary and pricing behaviour cannot be improvised.
  • Associate (Solutions Architect, Developer, CloudOps) — a real step up. These are scenario exams: multi-service situations with four plausible answers, where the skill is judgement, not recall. AWS recommends around a year of hands-on experience, and whilst determined candidates pass without it, they pass by replacing that experience with substantially more study and practice.
  • Professional and specialty — genuinely hard. These exams assume you already do the work at depth — advanced architecture, DevOps, security, networking — and their scenarios are long, layered and unforgiving of shallow knowledge. They cost $300 per attempt at the time of writing, and attempting one without real experience is the most expensive way to measure that gap.

What actually makes AWS exams hard

The difficulty is not what people expect. AWS exams contain no coding, no maths beyond arithmetic, and no deliberate trick questions. The hard parts are subtler. First, breadth: even the foundational syllabus spans dozens of services, and the associates expect you to know not just what each service does but its limits, costs and failure modes. Nobody’s day job touches all of it, so every candidate is studying something unfamiliar.

Second, the scenario format. Associate questions describe a business situation and offer several answers that all work — the exam asks which is best against the stated constraint: cheapest, most resilient, most operationally simple. Distractors are plausible services misapplied, so half-knowledge is punished precisely. Third, the vocabulary: AWS names, service categories and pricing models form a language of their own, and general tech intuition without that language runs out quickly. What the exams are not is memorisation tests — cramming service facts without understanding when they apply fails against scenarios, which is exactly the design intent.

“Hard” is relative to your starting point

The same exam sits at completely different difficulty depending on who is sitting it. For an engineer who deploys to AWS weekly, the CloudOps associate is largely a formalisation of their job; for a career changer, the same paper is a mountain of new material. Neither experience of the exam is the “true” one — difficulty is the distance between the syllabus and where you currently stand, which is why blanket verdicts you read online (“SAA is easy”, “SOA is brutal”) mostly describe the writer, not the exam.

Background changes the gradient in predictable ways. Prior IT or infrastructure experience shortens the runway for the architect and CloudOps exams; a programming background makes the Developer associate the natural door in; no technical background at all points squarely at Cloud Practitioner first, where the exam is built for exactly that starting point. Calibrate against your own distance, choose the exam nearest your experience, and the perceived difficulty drops a level without the credential being worth any less.

Passable with structure — but there are no shortcuts

The honest good news: every AWS certification is very passable with structured preparation, and the structure is publicly available. Each exam has a published blueprint listing its domains and weightings — the syllabus is not a secret — and AWS Skill Builder’s free courses plus hands-on practice on the AWS Free Tier cover the ground without spending anything beyond the exam fee. The mechanics are also more forgiving than the exams’ reputation suggests: scoring is compensatory (one scaled total across the paper, no need to pass every domain individually), there is no penalty for wrong answers, and a fail costs a 14-day wait and a rebooking fee, not a permanent mark.

The equally honest bad news: there is no version of this that works without the study. The scenario format is specifically resistant to cramming, question-dump memorisation breaks the exam agreement and collapses at the first reworded question, and “easy” routes sold online mostly produce certificates whose implied knowledge evaporates under one interview follow-up. The exams are hard enough that passing means something — which is the entire reason they are worth holding. A credential that required no preparation would not be.

How to gauge your own readiness

The reliable way to answer “is it too hard for me?” is to stop estimating and measure. Full-length, timed practice exams are the instrument: sit one under real conditions after a first pass through the syllabus, and the score — plus the per-domain breakdown — tells you exactly how far you are from the pass mark and where the distance lives. AWS exams are scaled from 100 to 1000, with Cloud Practitioner passing at 700 and the associates at 720, so the target you are measuring against is public.

The bar to book the real thing is consistency: clearing full-length mocks repeatedly, on fresh questions, under the clock — not once on a good day. Until the mocks say ready, the difficulty question answers itself: keep studying the weak domains the results point at. Once they do say ready, book while the consistency holds.
