Google Cloud ACE vs AWS SAA-C03: which associate certification?
Associate Cloud Engineer is Google Cloud’s core practitioner exam — deploying and managing projects, compute, storage, networking and access control, much of it through the console and the command line. SAA-C03 is AWS’s design exam, asking which architecture best meets a requirement. So beyond the obvious platform choice, you are picking between a hands-on operational exam and an architectural judgement one. Take the platform your work uses; if you are choosing freely, AWS has more job listings in most markets while Google Cloud is strong in data, analytics and machine-learning-heavy organisations.

Choose Google Cloud ACE if…
- Your organisation runs on Google Cloud, or you are targeting data, analytics or ML-heavy environments where it is common.
- You are comfortable at a command line — the exam expects real familiarity with gcloud, not just console clicking.
- You prefer an exam that tests what you would actually do rather than what you would design.
- You want a smaller, less saturated certification market than AWS.
Choose AWS SAA-C03 if…
- Your organisation runs on AWS, or you want the platform with the most listings in most markets.
- You want a design-oriented credential covering trade-offs across a whole platform.
- You want the widest choice of follow-on certifications and third-party study material.
- Your target role is architect or broad cloud engineer rather than hands-on operator.
The command line matters more on the Google Cloud exam
Associate Cloud Engineer expects you to know how things are actually done, including at the command line. Questions frequently hinge on which command or flag achieves a result, which makes hands-on practice non-optional in a way that reading alone cannot substitute for.
SAA-C03 is deliberately not a command-line exam. It describes a scenario and asks which combination of services best satisfies it. You can pass it with strong conceptual understanding and limited console time, although hands-on experience still helps considerably.
Scoring works differently, and it catches people out
AWS publishes a scaled score and a fixed pass mark, so you know exactly what you are aiming at and you get a numeric result. Google Cloud does not publish a numeric passing score at all — its exams are reported as pass or fail, with no number attached.
This matters for how you prepare. Without a published mark you cannot calibrate against a target, so the sensible approach for the Google Cloud exam is to aim for consistent comfort across every section rather than chasing a percentage. Which platform is the safer bet?
In raw job volume, AWS leads in most markets, and that is the honest reason it is the more common default. But volume is not the only consideration: Google Cloud roles are fewer and correspondingly less contested, and Google Cloud has particular strength in organisations doing serious data and machine-learning work.
The reliable method is unglamorous — search listings for the role you want in the location you want, and count. Local and sector realities diverge from global market-share figures often enough that the general argument is worth less than ten minutes of looking.
What each one leads to
ACE is the standard entry point to Google Cloud’s professional-level exams, which are widely regarded as demanding and assume substantial real experience. It is a stepping stone rather than a destination.
SAA-C03 sits at the centre of the AWS path, with specialisms in security, networking, data and machine learning branching from it, plus the professional tier above. If you want optionality within one platform, AWS currently offers more of it.
