DVA-C02 vs SOA-C03: Developer or CloudOps Engineer Associate?
The choice between AWS Certified Developer – Associate (DVA-C02) and AWS Certified CloudOps Engineer – Associate (SOA-C03) comes down to role, not difficulty: take DVA-C02 if you write and deploy application code on AWS, and SOA-C03 if you run, monitor and troubleshoot the workloads once they are live. Both sit at the same associate level with the same scenario-based question style, and neither is a prerequisite for the other. SOA-C03 is the exam formerly known as SysOps Administrator — AWS renamed the certification CloudOps Engineer with this version, but it targets the same operations role.

Choose the Developer exam if…
- You write application code for a living — building with Lambda, DynamoDB, API Gateway and the AWS SDKs is your day job or the job you want.
- Your interest is in how applications are built: event-driven patterns with SQS, SNS and EventBridge, API design, and application-level security with Cognito and IAM.
- You want to master the developer toolchain — CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code with SAM and CloudFormation, and tracing with X-Ray.
- Your career target is a software engineering role where AWS is the deployment platform, not the thing you administer.
Choose the CloudOps exam if…
- You keep systems running for a living — monitoring, alerting, incident response and remediation are your day job or the job you want.
- Your interest is in the platform itself: CloudWatch dashboards and alarms, Systems Manager automation, AWS Config compliance, and backup and disaster recovery.
- You want depth in networking — VPC design, private connectivity, DNS and content delivery, and the troubleshooting skills to diagnose why traffic is not flowing.
- Your career target is a cloud operations, site reliability or infrastructure role rather than a software engineering one.
How the two exams differ
DVA-C02 is organised around the life of an application: its largest domain, Development with AWS Services, covers writing code against Lambda, DynamoDB and the messaging services, followed by Security, Deployment and finally Troubleshooting and Optimization. The perspective throughout is the person shipping the code — the exam asks how you would implement a feature, secure an API or wire up a CI/CD pipeline.
SOA-C03 flips the perspective to the person operating the platform. Its weight is spread more evenly, led by Monitoring, Logging, Analysis, Remediation, and Performance Optimization alongside Reliability and Business Continuity and Deployment, Provisioning, and Automation, with Networking and Content Delivery and Security and Compliance completing the set. The exam asks how you would detect a problem, automate its remediation, restore from backup or trace a connectivity failure. The two overlap on deployment tooling and observability — CloudFormation, CloudWatch and X-Ray appear on both — but the questions frame them differently: the developer instruments code, the CloudOps engineer watches the fleet.
Do you need one before the other?
No. AWS certifications have no prerequisites and the two exams sit at the same associate level, so there is no ordering — you take whichever matches your role, and both recommend about a year of hands-on experience in that role.
If you are choosing your first associate exam, let your job decide rather than any notion of a sequence. A developer who starts with SOA-C03 spends study time on fleet networking and backup strategy they may never use; an operations engineer who starts with DVA-C02 spends it on SDK code and API design they may never write. The right first exam is the one whose scenarios describe your working week.
Which is worth more?
They are valued by different hiring managers. DVA-C02 signals to engineering teams that you can build serverless and containerised applications on AWS properly — it maps to software engineer and backend developer roles where AWS is the platform. SOA-C03 signals to platform and infrastructure teams that you can keep production workloads healthy — it maps to cloud operations, systems and site reliability roles.
Neither is objectively the stronger credential; the stronger one is whichever matches the roles you are applying for. One honest caveat on recognition: because AWS renamed the certification from SysOps Administrator to CloudOps Engineer, some job postings still ask for "SysOps" — it is the same credential line, and SOA-C03 is its current form.
Can you hold both — and the DevOps Professional path
Yes, and the pairing is deliberate for some careers. Both exams share the associate fundamentals — IAM, the core compute, storage and database services, and infrastructure as code — so a meaningful slice of your first preparation carries straight into the second. Engineers who own the full lifecycle of a service, writing the code and carrying the pager for it, are exactly who the combination describes.
The pair also points at the same destination: AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional. That exam blends the two associate perspectives — automated deployment pipelines from the developer side, monitoring, incident response and resilient infrastructure from the operations side — and AWS positions both associates as its natural feeders. Holding either one qualifies you to attempt it; holding both means you have already studied most of its ground once.
