Is cloud computing saturated? An honest look at the market
Cloud computing is not saturated, but the entry level is genuinely competitive — there are more people trying to get their first cloud job than there are junior openings, while experienced and specialised roles remain hard to fill. Those two facts sit together uncomfortably, and most writing on this question picks one and ignores the other: either “the market is dead” or “companies are desperate for cloud engineers”. The honest picture is a market shaped like a funnel — crowded at the mouth, thin in the middle, and genuinely short of people at the specialised end. Saturated and competitive are not the same thing
A saturated market is one where demand has stopped — where the work itself is drying up and even skilled people cannot find it. That is not cloud computing. Organisations continue to migrate workloads, run growing estates, and struggle to operate what they have already built; the work exists and keeps being created. What people usually mean when they say cloud is “saturated” is something narrower and truer: the entry point is crowded. Many people are pursuing the same first rung at once, so junior applicants face long odds per advert even while the field as a whole keeps hiring.
That distinction matters because the two problems have opposite remedies. If demand were gone, the rational move would be to leave for another field. Because the real problem is supply of beginners, the rational move is to stop looking like the median beginner — which is an achievable, individual problem rather than a market-wide one. We won’t pretend the entry level is easy, and we won’t quote an applicant-to-vacancy ratio either, because any figure would be unsourceable and stale within months. Why the entry level got crowded
The crowding is largely a side effect of something good: the on-ramp into cloud became visible and accessible. A decade ago, getting into infrastructure work meant years of general IT first. Now there is a well-lit path — a foundational certification, free vendor training, cheap hands-on practice in a personal account — and huge numbers of career-changers, graduates and bootcamp alumni have understandably taken it. When a path becomes easy to see, it becomes busy.
Remote work widened the pool further. A junior role that once drew applicants from one city can now draw them from a whole country or several. Add the certification providers and bootcamps whose business depends on selling the dream of an easy transition, and you get an entry level where a large group of candidates hold roughly the same credentials, the same tutorial projects, and the same CV. None of this means the field failed those people — it means the baseline rose. What was a differentiator five years ago is now the starting line.
The middle and senior market is a different world
Talk to anyone who hires for experienced cloud roles and you hear the opposite complaint: the candidates are not there. Cloud security engineers who can actually threat-model a real estate, data engineers who can run pipelines in production, platform engineers who can build the internal tooling other teams depend on, architects who have lived through a migration and carry the scars — these people are hard to find and slow to grow, because the only way to mint them is years of real operation. No bootcamp produces them, which is precisely why no crowd forms.
This is the most useful fact in the whole debate, because it reframes the goal. The crowded entry level is a gate, not the destination. Every person who gets through it enters a market that wants more people than it can find, and the specialisations — security, data, platform engineering, cost and reliability work — are where the shortage is sharpest. The question for a beginner is not “is cloud worth entering?” but “how do I get through the crowded gate into the uncrowded field beyond it?”
What this means if you are starting now
Getting through the gate is about refusing to be the median applicant. Concretely:
- Build things you can show, not just certificates you can list. A small but real project — deployed, documented, written up, with the decisions and mistakes explained — separates you from the hundreds of CVs that stop at the badge. Hiring managers can no longer distinguish candidates by certification alone; they can distinguish them by evidence of work.
- Pick a direction early. “Cloud generalist” is the most crowded label there is. A beginner leaning visibly towards security, data, DevOps tooling or cost management competes with a fraction of the field and signals intent that generic applicants do not.
- Take the adjacent door if the front door is jammed. IT support, helpdesk, NOC and sysadmin roles are less glamorous and less contested, and they feed directly into cloud work — many working cloud engineers started exactly there, automating and cloud-ifying whatever was in front of them until the job title caught up.
- Use your existing domain. A career-changer from finance, healthcare or logistics who targets cloud roles in that industry brings context that a generic junior cannot, and employers in those sectors know it.
- Apply where the crowd is not. Household-name tech firms drown in applicants; the insurer, retailer, council or mid-size firm quietly migrating to AWS often struggles to attract any.
The honest role of certifications in a crowded market
A certification alone will not get you hired in this market, and it is fairer to say that plainly than to imply otherwise on a site that sells exam preparation. When many applicants hold the same badge, the badge stops differentiating — it becomes table stakes, the thing that keeps your CV in the pile rather than the thing that gets it picked out. That is still worth having: an application without the expected credential is often filtered out before a human sees it, and the study itself builds the vocabulary and mental model everything else stands on.
The certification earns its keep when it is the frame for hands-on work rather than a substitute for it. It would be easy to end with hype, so here is the grounded version instead. Cloud computing remains one of the more accessible routes into well-paid technical work: the learning materials are largely free, the practice environment costs little, no degree is formally required, and the field beyond the entry gate genuinely wants more people than it can find. The gate is real, it is crowded, and passing through it typically takes longer than the optimistic content promises — months of building and applying, sometimes via an adjacent role first, not weeks.
But crowded gates reward exactly the behaviour this article describes, because most of the crowd will not do it. Most candidates stop at the certificate, apply generically, and give up when the first fifty applications go nowhere. If you build real things, aim at a specialisation, consider the side entrances and persist past the point where the tourists leave, you are not competing with the whole crowd — you are competing with the small fraction of it doing what you are doing. The market is not saturated. The shortcut is. Those are different problems, and the second one you can solve.
