AWS certification vs a degree: which matters more for a cloud career?

They answer different questions

When a hiring manager sees an AWS certification, it answers: “does this person have organised, current knowledge of this specific platform?” When they see a degree, it answers something broader and vaguer: “has this person sustained years of structured learning, and do they have a general educational foundation?” Both are signals rather than proof of ability — neither tells anyone what you can actually build — but they are signals about different things, dated differently: a certification speaks to now (and expires in three years precisely to stay current); a degree speaks to a capacity demonstrated once, however long ago.

A cloud-focused team screening for platform skills weighs the certification heavily; a large enterprise’s HR filter, a government employer, or a visa points system may weigh the degree in ways no certification can substitute for. The case for the certification route

For cloud roles specifically, the certification route has structural advantages that are easy to state and hard to dismiss:

  • Current: the syllabus tracks the platform as it exists today, and the three-year expiry forces the credential to stay fresh — a degree’s technical content starts ageing the day it is printed.
  • Specific: it maps directly to the tools of the job. “AWS Certified Solutions Architect” tells a cloud team more about relevant knowledge than a degree title ever can.
  • Cheap and fast: an exam fee and weeks-to-months of study, against years and a life-changing sum. The difference in cost is not marginal — it is orders of magnitude.
  • Open: no admissions, no prerequisites, no age or background gate. It can be earned around a full-time job, from anywhere, starting this week.
  • Verifiable: vendor-backed and digitally checkable, which matters on a CV with no cloud employer on it yet.

The case for the degree — stated fairly

A fair comparison has to grant the degree its real strengths, because they are the ones certifications cannot replicate. A degree is durable, broad signalling: it never expires, it is recognised across every industry and border, and it speaks in contexts where vendor credentials carry little weight — some corporate HR filters still list one as a requirement, some public-sector and enterprise employers weight it heavily, and several countries’ visa and immigration processes award it points that no certification earns. If your career may cross those gates, the degree’s value is partly outside hiring managers’ hands entirely.

A good computer science degree also teaches what certification syllabuses do not attempt: the fundamentals underneath the platform — algorithms, operating systems, networking theory, how to reason about systems in general. AWS services change; those foundations do not, and engineers with them often absorb new platforms faster. The honest summary: the degree is a slower, broader, dramatically more expensive investment whose payoff spreads over decades and contexts — which is exactly why it is the wrong instrument to compare one-for-one against a focused, current platform credential.

What actually happens in cloud hiring

The observable reality of the field cuts through the theory: many successful cloud engineers have no computer science degree, and many have one — the industry accommodates both, and cloud is notably friendlier to non-traditional backgrounds than older corners of tech. A meaningful share of employers have dropped degree requirements for engineering roles, and vendor certifications are broadly understood as the accessible route by which career changers prove platform knowledge. None of that means degrees are worthless in tech; it means their absence is survivable in this field in a way it may not be elsewhere.

What actually decides interviews, for holders of either credential, is demonstrable skill: what you have built, how you reason about systems, and whether you can do what your CV implies. Both a certification and a degree get you into conversations; neither wins them. That is worth internalising before spending either months or years on signalling — the signal gets you through the filter, and the evidence gets you the offer.

Practical advice by situation

If you already have a degree — in anything — the question dissolves: you are not choosing, you are stacking. Add the certification; it is the cheap, fast half, it makes your existing education legible to cloud employers, and a non-technical degree plus a technical certification is a common and credible profile. If you are mid-career without a degree, going back for one solely to enter cloud is rarely the efficient move — certification plus a portfolio attacks the same door at a fraction of the cost and time, and the field demonstrably lets people through it.

The genuinely hard case is the school leaver choosing between university and certifying straight into work — and honesty requires saying this is a major life decision this article should inform, not make. The certification route is real, fast and cheap, but it trades away the degree’s decades of broad signalling, its fundamentals, and its portability across borders and industries. If you do go to university, certifications are not thereby irrelevant — a graduate with a degree and an AWS certification is stronger than either alone. The strongest junior profile uses neither alone

A certification proves organised current knowledge; a handful of real, documented projects — something deployed properly, something automated, something monitored, visible on GitHub with honest write-ups — proves you can apply it. Together they answer both questions an employer is silently asking; separately, each leaves half the doubt intact. The degree, where present, strengthens the profile further; where absent, this combination is precisely what substitutes for it.

So spend your energy where it compounds: whichever credential path you are on, build alongside it. The certificate-versus-degree debate is mostly a proxy for a more useful question — “what is the cheapest, fastest credible signal for the roles I want, and what evidence will back it?” — and that one has an actionable answer for almost everyone.
