How hard is AWS Solutions Architect (SAA-C03)?

AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate (SAA-C03) is a moderately hard exam and a clear step up from Cloud Practitioner. It does not test obscure facts; it tests judgement. Most questions describe a workload and offer several designs that would all work, and you have to pick the one that best fits a stated priority such as lowest cost, least operational overhead or highest availability. People with hands-on AWS experience are typically ready after one to three months of focused study; people without it find it hard.

Where SAA-C03 learners lose marks

This is how SaveMyCert learners do on our SAA-C03 practice questions, domain by domain, on the first try. Across 1,621 first answers to SAA-C03 practice questions on SaveMyCert, learners chose the right answer 54% of the time.

How this is measured: each question counts once per practice session, on the first answer. These are SaveMyCert learners part-way through preparing, answering our original questions, so treat the figures as a guide to which domains trip people up — not as a pass rate. The real exam does not score a raw percentage, so none of these figures is the pass mark.

Why SAA-C03 questions are hard

A typical SAA-C03 question is a paragraph of scenario followed by four options that are all technically possible. The difficulty is in the qualifier. "Most cost-effective", "least operational overhead", "with no data loss" and "without changing the application" each point to a different answer, and a candidate who reads past that phrase will pick a design that works but is not the best one.

Multiple-response questions add a second layer: you must choose every correct option and nothing else, with no partial credit.

The topics that trip people up

The exam guide spreads questions across security, resilience, performance and cost. Within those, a few areas account for most wrong answers:

  • VPC networking: when to use a gateway endpoint, an interface endpoint, a NAT gateway, VPC peering or Transit Gateway, and how security groups differ from network ACLs.
  • Choosing storage and databases: S3 storage classes and lifecycle rules, EBS volume types versus EFS versus FSx, and Aurora versus RDS versus DynamoDB for a given access pattern.
  • Decoupling and scaling: SQS versus SNS versus EventBridge, and what triggers an Auto Scaling action.
  • Multi-account security: IAM roles across accounts, service control policies in AWS Organizations, and encryption with KMS keys.

How long it takes to prepare

AWS recommends about a year of hands-on experience designing solutions on AWS. With that background, most candidates need four to eight weeks of study to fill gaps and learn the exam style. Without it — for example straight after Cloud Practitioner — plan on two to three months and build things in a free-tier account as you go, because scenario questions are much easier when you have seen the services behave.

The SAA-C03 study plan guide linked below lays out a week-by-week schedule.

Who finds it hardest

Candidates who learned AWS only from videos struggle most, because the exam rewards knowing how services behave under failure and at scale. Developers who know a few services deeply often find networking and storage choices hardest. People coming from Azure or Google Cloud usually understand the architecture but need time on AWS names and limits.

How to tell you are ready

For every practice question, find the phrase in the scenario that rules out each wrong option. If you can do that consistently, the exam style is no longer the obstacle. Then take full-length timed mock exams — time pressure is real on SAA-C03 because the scenarios are long — and book once you pass them comfortably on the first attempt rather than on a re-take of the same questions.

Plan your prep

Questions, answered

Yes, it is noticeably harder. The exam assumes you know how AWS services behave in real designs. Without experience, plan two to three months of study and build things yourself in a free-tier account alongside the theory.
