ISC2 CC vs CompTIA Security+: which security cert first?

ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity (CC) is the lighter on-ramp: a knowledge exam built for people with no security background, which most candidates prepare for in weeks. CompTIA Security+ is broader and deeper, adds performance-based tasks to its multiple-choice questions, and CompTIA recommends hands-on security administration experience before you sit it. If you are starting from zero, CC first is the sensible order. If you already work in IT or security, most people go straight to CompTIA Security+, the credential job adverts name more often.

Choose ISC2 CC first if…

  • You are new to security, with no IT job behind you yet.
  • You want a credible first credential quickly, on a smaller study budget.
  • You want vendor-neutral fundamentals from the body behind the CISSP.
  • You would rather build confidence on a knowledge exam before a tougher one.

Go straight to CompTIA Security+ if…

  • You already work in IT support, networking or system administration.
  • Job adverts for the roles you want name CompTIA Security+ specifically.
  • You want one certification that doubles as a thorough survey of the field.
  • You are aiming at hiring processes that set it as a formal baseline, as some government-adjacent employers do.

Depth is the real difference

Both exams are vendor-neutral and both cover the same territory at the top level: security principles, access control, network defence, operations and incident response, and governance. CC stops at the definitions and the concepts behind them. CompTIA Security+ goes further on each: it asks you to choose controls for a scenario, read indicators of an attack, compare architectures, and work through risk calculations and audit types.

The current CompTIA Security+ version, SY0-801, also adds an objective on threats to and from AI systems, so material written for the older version does not cover all of it.

The exams feel different

CC is a computerised adaptive test: each question is chosen from your previous answers, and you cannot skip, flag or go back. The questions are short and definitional, so rhythm matters more than deliberation.

CompTIA Security+ is a fixed-form exam that mixes multiple-choice items with performance-based questions, interactive tasks such as placing controls or reading logs. You can flag items and return to them, and you will need to, because those tasks consume time unevenly. The facts table above shows each exam’s question count, time limit and pass mark from the vendors’ own pages.

What each says on a CV

CC tells an employer you have engaged seriously with security fundamentals. That helps a career changer get past an early filter, and it is a sensible first rung, but it proves less, and candidates with IT experience often skip it.

CompTIA Security+ has the longer track record and is widely named in job adverts for security roles. Some government and defence-adjacent hiring processes use it as a formal baseline. Neither certification gets you hired on its own: a home lab, documented projects or an adjacent IT role carry as much weight as the badge.

Keeping them current

Both are valid for three years and are maintained rather than retaken. ISC2 asks for continuing professional education credits plus an annual maintenance fee. CompTIA renews through its continuing education (CE) programme, so you keep the certification by continuing to learn rather than resitting the exam.

Fees for both exams change, and CompTIA prices vary by region, so check each vendor’s page before you budget.

Questions, answered

Yes, by design. CC is a foundational knowledge exam with a tighter syllabus that assumes no background. CompTIA Security+ covers more ground in more depth, adds performance-based tasks, and CompTIA recommends hands-on security administration experience first, so it needs considerably more study.
