AWS Data Engineer vs Fabric Data Engineer: which data certification?
Both certify data engineering at associate level — ingesting, transforming, storing and governing data — but on very different platforms. DEA-C01 covers building pipelines with AWS’s data services, an ecosystem of many specialised components you assemble yourself. DP-700 covers Microsoft Fabric, a single integrated analytics platform with lakehouses, warehouses and real-time streams under one roof. Neither is a general data-engineering qualification: each is worth taking only if you work on, or are moving to, that specific platform.

Choose AWS Data Engineer if…
- Your data stack runs on AWS, or you are targeting AWS-based data roles.
- You are comfortable assembling a pipeline from separate specialised services rather than working inside one platform.
- You already hold or plan to hold other AWS certifications and want a coherent path.
- You want the larger job market of the two in most regions.
Choose Fabric Data Engineer if…
- Your organisation has adopted Microsoft Fabric, or is on the Microsoft data stack and heading that way.
- You work with lakehouses, warehouses and real-time analytics inside one integrated environment.
- You are already fluent in the Microsoft ecosystem — Power BI, Entra ID, Azure.
- You want a certification in a newer platform with fewer certified candidates competing.
Assembled ecosystem versus integrated platform
AWS data engineering means choosing and connecting components: something for ingestion, something for transformation, something for storage, something for orchestration, something for cataloguing. The exam tests whether you can pick the right one for a requirement and wire them together sensibly. That flexibility is the strength and the difficulty.
Fabric takes the opposite approach: one platform with the pieces already integrated. The exam tests whether you can work effectively inside it — lakehouses and warehouses, the ingestion and transformation tooling, real-time streams, and the performance and monitoring work that follows. Fewer choices to make, more platform-specific detail to know.
How transferable is each one?
The underlying concepts transfer well in both directions. Batch versus streaming ingestion, schema design, partitioning, incremental loads, orchestration, data quality and governance are the same problems everywhere, and someone who understands them on one platform understands them on the other.
The specifics do not transfer at all. Service names, defaults, quotas and tooling are entirely different, and neither certification will help you pass the other. Treat these as platform credentials that happen to share a subject, not as interchangeable data-engineering qualifications.
Renewal and long-term cost
AWS associate certifications are valid for a fixed period and recertifying means paying for and sitting the current exam again. Microsoft role-based certifications expire after a year, but renewal is free through a short unproctored assessment on Microsoft Learn.
For a fast-moving area like data platforms, Microsoft’s annual free renewal has a second benefit beyond cost: it nudges you to revisit the material each year, which in a platform still evolving as quickly as Fabric is genuinely useful rather than merely administrative.
Which has the better job market?
AWS has the larger data-engineering job market in most regions, simply because more organisations run their data platforms there. If you have no constraint and want the widest choice of employers, that is the pragmatic answer.
Fabric is newer, which cuts both ways: fewer roles, but also far fewer certified candidates, and organisations adopting it tend to need people urgently. If your employer is already committed to the Microsoft data stack, DP-700 is clearly the better investment of your study time.
