AWS AI Practitioner vs Google Generative AI Leader: which AI certification?
Both are entry-level AI certifications with no prerequisites, but they are aimed at different readers. AWS AI Practitioner leans technical: machine-learning concepts, the AWS AI services, prompt techniques and responsible deployment. Google’s Generative AI Leader is deliberately business-framed — what generative AI is, what it can and cannot do, and how an organisation adopts it — with no command line anywhere in it. Choose the AWS exam if you will work with the technology, and the Google one if you will make decisions about it.

Choose AWS AI Practitioner if…
- You are technical, or heading that way, and want to understand how AI services are actually used.
- You already work on or near AWS and want your AI credential on the same platform.
- You want coverage of model selection, prompting and the practical mechanics rather than only the strategy.
- You plan to progress toward deeper machine-learning or data certifications later.
Choose Google Generative AI Leader if…
- Your role is strategic rather than technical — leadership, product, consulting, transformation.
- You need to reason about AI adoption, risk and value rather than build with it.
- You want a certification explicitly designed to be taken by any job role, with no engineering assumed.
- Your organisation is on Google Cloud, or platform-agnostic in its AI thinking.
How technical is each one really?
AWS AI Practitioner is foundational, not advanced, but it does assume you want to understand mechanics: what a foundation model is, how retrieval-augmented generation works, what changes when you tune a prompt versus fine-tune a model, and which AWS service you would reach for. There is no coding, but the framing is a builder’s.
Google’s Generative AI Leader is framed for decision-makers throughout. It covers what the technology does, where the value and the risk sit, and how organisations put it to work. If you want to know which button to press, it is the wrong exam; if you want to lead a conversation about whether to press it, it is the right one.
Responsible AI appears on both, and it is worth taking seriously
Bias, fairness, transparency, data handling and safe deployment feature in both exam guides, and both vendors treat the subject as genuinely examinable rather than as a footnote. This is one of the few areas where the material has real transfer value outside the exam.
It is also the part of the syllabus that ages best. Model names and service catalogues shift constantly; the questions about whether a system is fair, explainable and safe to deploy do not.
The shelf life problem
AI certifications age faster than anything else in this catalogue. Both vendors revise their AI exam guides more often than their infrastructure ones, and any preparation built around specific model names, versions or benchmark scores will be stale within months.
That is a reason to concentrate on concepts, and a reason to check the current exam guide before you book rather than trusting a study plan written six months ago. It is also why our AI content deliberately avoids naming specific models and versions.
Is either worth holding on its own?
For a non-technical role, a foundational AI certification is a reasonable standalone credential — it demonstrates you have engaged with the subject seriously rather than absorbed it from headlines, which is genuinely uncommon at management level.
For a technical role, neither is sufficient by itself. They pair best with a cloud certification that covers the platform underneath, plus something you have actually built. AI systems still run on compute, storage and identity, and no AI exam teaches you those.
