The Azure administrator career path, explained

An Azure administrator manages an organisation’s Azure environment day to day — identities, storage, compute, networking, monitoring and cost — and the usual route in is from IT support, system administration or on-premises infrastructure, adding Azure skills and the AZ-104 certification. It is an operational role rather than a design one: where an architect decides what should be built, the administrator keeps what exists running, secure, monitored and affordable. For people already working in Microsoft-centred IT, it is one of the most natural transitions into cloud work, because so much of the existing knowledge — Windows Server, Active Directory, networking — carries over with a new console on top. Here is what the job actually involves, who it suits, the skills and certifications that lead there, and how to build evidence without inventing a salary figure to chase.

What an Azure administrator does day to day

The neatest description of the job is the AZ-104 exam blueprint itself, because its domains are literally the work: managing identities and governance in Microsoft Entra ID (the service formerly called Azure Active Directory) — users, groups, role assignments, access policies; implementing and managing storage accounts and their security; deploying and managing compute, chiefly virtual machines but increasingly containers and app services; configuring virtual networking — VNets, subnets, network security groups, DNS, connectivity; and monitoring resources with Azure Monitor while keeping backup and recovery honest.

Around those technical domains sits the operational rhythm: handling requests (a new starter needs access, a team needs a VM), applying updates and policies, investigating alerts, right-sizing resources that are costing more than they should, and documenting the environment. Cost management is a genuine part of the role — cloud spend is visible in a way on-premises spend never was, and administrators are usually the first line of keeping it sane. It is varied, hands-on work where the console, PowerShell and the CLI are open all day.

Who it suits — and the common routes in

The role suits people who like keeping systems healthy more than designing them from scratch: methodical troubleshooters who enjoy breadth across identity, networking, storage and compute rather than depth in one. The most common backgrounds are Windows system administrators, IT support and helpdesk staff, and on-premises infrastructure engineers — and that is no accident. Organisations that run Microsoft on-premises overwhelmingly choose Azure for cloud, so the person who managed Active Directory and Windows Server is naturally asked to manage Entra ID and Azure VMs when workloads move.

That ecosystem overlap makes this one of the smoothest cloud transitions available. Concepts transfer directly — group policy thinking maps to Azure Policy, on-premises AD maps to Entra ID, VLANs and firewalls map to VNets and network security groups. If you are in IT support today, the realistic sequence is to volunteer for anything Azure-touching in your current role, build the skills below in parallel, and let the job title catch up with the work you are already doing.

The skills to build

The skill set is broad rather than deep, and best built in roughly this order:

  1. Azure fundamentals — what the platform is, how subscriptions, resource groups and regions organise everything, and what the core services do. Microsoft Learn’s free AZ-900 path covers this well.
  2. Hands-on administration — actually creating and managing VMs, storage accounts, VNets and identities in a free Azure account or Microsoft Learn sandboxes, not just reading about them.
  3. Identity and Entra ID — users, groups, roles, conditional access and least privilege. Identity is the security perimeter in the cloud, and it anchors both the exam and the job.
  4. Networking — subnets, network security groups, DNS, peering and hybrid connectivity. Weak networking is the most common gap in candidates from support backgrounds.
  5. PowerShell and the Azure CLI — administrators automate; doing everything in the portal does not scale past a small environment.
  6. Infrastructure as code — ARM templates and especially Bicep, so environments are reproducible rather than hand-built. Terraform knowledge travels well too.
  7. Monitoring, backup and cost management — Azure Monitor, alerts, backup policies and Cost Management, because keeping the environment observable and affordable is the job’s quiet core.

The certification route: AZ-900, AZ-104 and beyond

The credential path is short and clear. AZ-900 Azure Fundamentals is the optional on-ramp — worth taking if you are new to cloud or want a confidence-building first pass, skippable if you already have hands-on experience; it never expires. AZ-104 Azure Administrator Associate is the certification that defines the role: it tests the exact domains described above, expects genuine hands-on familiarity, and can include case studies and drag-and-drop tasks alongside multiple choice, with Microsoft’s standard pass mark of 700 out of 1000. Like all Azure role-based certifications, AZ-104 expires after one year and renews free through an online, unproctored assessment on Microsoft Learn, available in the six months before expiry — a lighter touch than AWS’s three-year full re-sit model. Beyond AZ-104, the natural next steps are AZ-305 Azure Solutions Architect Expert for those heading towards design work, or a specialty aligned with where your organisation needs depth, such as networking or security.

How it relates to AWS-side roles

The Azure administrator role has a direct AWS analogue: the cloud operations or CloudOps engineer, the role AWS’s SOA-C03 CloudOps Engineer Associate certification (formerly SysOps Administrator) maps to. The work is the same shape — keeping a cloud environment running, secure, monitored and cost-sane — with different service names: Entra ID versus IAM, VNets versus VPCs, Azure Monitor versus CloudWatch. The concepts transfer almost one to one, which is why administrators can and do work across both platforms, particularly in organisations running multi-cloud.

Which side to start on is mostly a market question: look at live job adverts where you live. Microsoft-heavy enterprises, the public sector and organisations deep in Microsoft 365 lean Azure; startups and cloud-native companies lean AWS. Evidence, pay and the honest picture

You may be looking for a salary figure here, and we will not invent one. Published Azure administrator salary numbers vary enormously by country, sector, company size and how much of the role is genuinely cloud versus rebadged on-premises work — any single average would mislead more than it informs. The honest method is to read live job adverts for Azure administrator roles in your own market: they tell you the real pay range, and just as usefully, the exact skills and certifications employers there ask for.

What strengthens an application regardless of market: a public GitHub repository of lab work — a VNet you designed, Bicep templates that build an environment, a monitoring setup with real alerts — plus the AZ-104 badge and a CV that describes operational wins in your current role (an automation that saved hours, an access review completed, a cost reduction found). Administrators are hired on trustworthiness with production systems, and documented, careful hands-on work is the closest a candidate can come to proving it in advance.
