How hard is the Terraform Associate exam?
The HashiCorp Terraform Associate (004) exam is moderately easy if you already use Terraform and genuinely hard if you have only read about it. It is an associate-level exam with short questions, but many of them ask what a specific command, block or setting will do — the kind of detail you remember from running Terraform, not from watching a course. Practitioners typically prepare in two to four weeks; newcomers should plan on six to eight with plenty of hands-on practice.
Where Terraform Associate learners lose marks
This is how SaveMyCert learners do on our Terraform Associate practice questions, objective by objective, on the first try. HashiCorp publishes objectives but not official weights, so the weights shown are our estimate from the outline. Across 875 first answers to Terraform 004 practice questions on SaveMyCert, learners chose the right answer 67% of the time. The lowest-scoring domain is HCP Terraform, at 54%.
| Exam domain | Exam weight | Answers | Right first time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Infrastructure as Code (IaC) with Terraform | 8% | 76 | 76% |
| 2. Terraform fundamentals | 11% | 102 | 65% |
| 3. Core Terraform workflow | 19% | 195 | 73% |
| 4. Terraform configuration | 22% | 185 | 66% |
| 5. Terraform modules | 11% | 82 | 71% |
| 6. Terraform state management | 11% | 88 | 63% |
| 7. Maintain infrastructure with Terraform | 8% | 64 | 64% |
| 8. HCP Terraform | 10% | 83 | 54% |
How this is measured: each question counts once per practice session, on the first answer. These are SaveMyCert learners part-way through preparing, answering our original questions, so treat the figures as a guide to which domains trip people up — not as a pass rate. The real exam does not score a raw percentage, so none of these figures is the pass mark.
What the exam actually tests
The exam follows HashiCorp’s published objectives: infrastructure as code concepts, providers and state, the core workflow, writing configuration, modules, managing state and resources over time, and HCP Terraform. Questions are true/false, multiple choice and multiple answer. They are short, but they are specific — "what happens when you run this", "which block does this", "where is this value stored".
What makes it harder than it looks
Most lost marks come from details that only hands-on use teaches:
- State: what the state file holds, why remote state and locking matter, and how sensitive values end up in it.
- Changing existing infrastructure: import blocks, moved blocks, the -replace option and refresh-only plans, and which of them change real infrastructure.
- Language details: count versus for_each, dynamic blocks, lifecycle arguments, and how variables, locals and outputs are referenced.
- HCP Terraform: workspaces, remote runs and policy features, which candidates who only use the CLI have never seen.
How long it takes to prepare
If you write Terraform at work, two to four weeks is usually enough to fill gaps in the objectives you do not use day to day — typically HCP Terraform and state manipulation. If you are new to Terraform, allow six to eight weeks and run every command you study against a real provider in a sandbox account; reading alone does not stick for this exam.
The Terraform Associate study plan guide linked below gives a weekly breakdown.
Who finds it hardest
Candidates who learned Terraform only from videos struggle with command-behaviour questions. Experienced users of the open-source CLI sometimes lose marks on HCP Terraform features they have never used, and people who learned on an older Terraform version can be caught out by newer features such as import and moved blocks.
How to tell you are ready
For each objective, check you can predict what Terraform will do before you run it, and confirm by running it. When you can explain why each wrong option in a practice question is wrong, and you pass timed mixed practice consistently, you are ready. HashiCorp reports the result as pass or fail rather than a score.
