How hard is the CompTIA Tech+ exam?

CompTIA Tech+ (FC0-U71) is an easy exam by IT certification standards: it is CompTIA’s entry-level certification, CompTIA says no prior experience is necessary, and every question is multiple choice. Most people are ready after two to six weeks of study. What makes it harder than its level suggests is breadth. The objectives run from hardware, networking and operating systems to programming concepts, databases, security and AI, so candidates who know one area well can still lose marks across the others.

What makes CompTIA Tech+ approachable

CompTIA Tech+ is written for students and people outside IT, and it tests understanding rather than hands-on skill. There are no performance-based tasks, only multiple-choice questions. CompTIA publishes the full exam objectives with example terms under each one, so you can see exactly what is in scope before you start.

The topics that trip people up

Candidates who find CompTIA Tech+ harder than expected usually lose marks in these areas:

  • Notation and units. Converting between binary, decimal and hexadecimal, and telling storage units, throughput units and processing speeds apart, is easy to skip and easy to get wrong.
  • The troubleshooting methodology. Questions ask which step comes next, so you need the steps in CompTIA’s order, not just the general idea.
  • Software development concepts. Programming language categories, data types, variables and functions, pseudocode and flowcharts are new to many candidates from non-technical backgrounds.
  • Databases. Relational versus non-relational structures, primary and foreign keys, and structured versus semi-structured data are tested precisely.
  • Interfaces and connectors. The objectives name many cable types, ports and wireless standards, and the options often mix them up.

How long it takes to prepare

Complete beginners typically need four to six weeks of steady study, because much of the vocabulary is new. People who already use computers confidently, or who have done some IT support or coding, can often prepare in two to three weeks, spending most of the time on the areas they have not met, such as databases or programming concepts.

Who finds it hardest

People with no technical background find the notation systems, programming concepts and database content hardest, because these are abstract until you have worked with them. Hobbyists and self-taught technicians tend to find hardware and networking easy but lose marks on the troubleshooting order, data concepts and security best practice, where the exam expects CompTIA’s wording rather than a workable approach.

How to tell you are ready

Check that you can convert a number between binary, decimal and hexadecimal, list the troubleshooting steps in order, and explain primary and foreign keys without notes. Then sit timed mock exams. When you pass them consistently with margin across every domain, rather than on the strength of one or two, you are ready to book.

Questions, answered

No. CompTIA Tech+ is an entry-level exam designed for students and people outside IT, and CompTIA says no prior experience is necessary. Beginners should allow four to six weeks of steady study, because the exam covers a wide range of topics.
