AWS Developer Associate (DVA-C02): a complete guide
The AWS Certified Developer – Associate (DVA-C02) is an associate-level certification for people who build applications on AWS — validating your ability to develop, deploy, secure and troubleshoot cloud applications using AWS services, SDKs and APIs. Where the Solutions Architect – Associate certifies designing systems, the DVA-C02 certifies actually building and running the applications that live inside them, and it assumes you can read and reason about code before you start. What it is and who it is for
The DVA-C02 is written for developers building applications that run on AWS — not infrastructure designers, but people writing code that calls AWS services, deploying it, and keeping it running. Its scenarios assume you can read a code snippet or an SDK call and reason about what it does; it does not teach you to code, and it is a poor fit if you cannot already do that comfortably. It suits application developers, backend engineers and full-stack developers who have real hands-on experience developing and deploying on AWS. As with every AWS associate exam, there is no formal prerequisite, but the exam is written assuming genuine application-development experience rather than architecture-only familiarity.
The four domains
The DVA-C02 blueprint covers four domains, tracking the lifecycle of building and running an application:
- Development with AWS Services — writing applications that use AWS services, SDKs and APIs correctly and idiomatically.
- Security — implementing authentication, authorisation and secure coding practices for applications running on AWS.
- Deployment — packaging, deploying and managing application releases using AWS’s deployment and CI/CD tooling.
- Troubleshooting and Optimization — diagnosing application issues and improving performance using AWS’s monitoring and debugging tools.
What it emphasises
Conceptually, the exam centres on the AWS services developers touch most directly. Serverless computing is a strong theme — building with Lambda, exposing functionality through API Gateway, and storing application data in DynamoDB. Beyond that it covers using AWS SDKs and APIs correctly from application code, deploying and managing releases through CI/CD services, securing applications with IAM at the application layer, and observing running applications through logging and monitoring tooling.
None of this requires memorising specific limits, pricing or configuration syntax; the exam tests whether you understand what each service is for and how it fits into an application’s lifecycle, which is exactly the judgement built by actually developing and deploying something.
How it compares to the Solutions Architect Associate
The simplest way to choose between them is by what you actually do: SAA-C03 designs systems — the shape of an architecture, its services and how they fit together — while DVA-C02 builds applications — the code, deployment pipeline and runtime behaviour that live inside that shape. A solutions architect who never writes code fits SAA-C03; a developer who ships application code onto AWS fits DVA-C02. They are not sequential — neither is a prerequisite for the other, and the two certifications share a meaningful common core of AWS fundamentals, so holding one makes the other noticeably easier to add later.
Logistics: fee, format, scoring and validity
The DVA-C02 follows standard AWS associate mechanics. The fee is $150 at the time of writing — check AWS’s pricing page for the current figure — delivered by Pearson VUE at a test centre or online via OnVUE. The exam has 65 questions in 130 minutes, multiple-choice and multiple-response, with no penalty for wrong answers.
Scoring is scaled from 100 to 1000 with a pass mark of 720, compensatory across all four domains. The certification is valid for three years, passing earns a 50% discount voucher toward your next AWS exam plus a verifiable Credly badge, and a failed attempt means a 14-day wait before rebooking. Non-native English speakers can request a 30-minute extension through their AWS Certification Account before booking.
Is it worth it?
For developers building on AWS, yes — it is a specific, credible signal that you can develop, deploy, secure and troubleshoot real applications on the platform, which is a more precise claim than general cloud familiarity. We will not invent salary or demand figures here; live job adverts asking for AWS application-development experience are the honest evidence, and the DVA-C02 maps closely onto what those roles actually do day to day.
The usual caveat applies: it certifies experience you already have, not experience it hands you. Taken alongside real development and deployment work, even on personal projects, it is a strong line on a CV. Taken as pure exam-cram with no hands-on practice, it will be a hard exam and a thinner credential.
