Logistics: fee, format, scoring and validity

The SAA-C03 follows standard AWS associate mechanics. The fee is $150 at the time of writing — check AWS’s pricing page for the current figure — delivered by Pearson VUE at a test centre or online via OnVUE. The exam has 65 questions in 130 minutes, multiple-choice and multiple-response, with no penalty for wrong answers, so never leave one blank.

Scoring is scaled from 100 to 1000 with a pass mark of 720, compensatory across all four domains — a strong showing in one can offset a weaker one, since only the overall total matters. The certification is valid for three years, passing earns a 50% discount voucher toward your next AWS exam plus a verifiable Credly badge, and a failed attempt means a 14-day wait before rebooking. Non-native English speakers can request a 30-minute extension through their AWS Certification Account before booking.

How it fits the path

Many candidates take the Cloud Practitioner first to build a vocabulary of AWS concepts, then move to SAA-C03 as their first real technical proof point; experienced practitioners with genuine hands-on AWS work often go straight in, since there is no prerequisite. From here, the path opens two ways: sideways into another associate such as Developer or CloudOps depending on your role, or upward toward the Solutions Architect – Professional once you have real architecture experience to draw on.

Is it worth it?

For most people building a career around AWS, yes — its breadth and recognition make it the single most useful associate-level credential to hold. It will not by itself guarantee a role or a pay rise, and anyone claiming a fixed salary uplift from a badge is guessing; the honest evidence is what live job adverts ask for, and SAA-C03 appears in AWS-related listings more often than any other associate certification.

The caveat is the same one that applies to every AWS exam: it certifies architectural judgement built from real practice, not from reading alone. Taken alongside genuine hands-on time — even small personal projects — it is a strong, credible signal. Taken as a pure memorisation exercise, it will be a harder exam to pass and a thinner credential once passed.
