GCP Associate Cloud Engineer certification: a complete guide

The Google Cloud Associate Cloud Engineer (ACE) is an associate-level, hands-on certification that validates your ability to deploy, manage and operate solutions on Google Cloud — the standard entry technical GCP credential for cloud engineers and administrators. Unlike foundational certifications that test broad literacy, the ACE assumes you have actually used Google Cloud: created projects, deployed workloads, configured access and kept things running. Google recommends around six months of hands-on experience, though there is no formal prerequisite. What the ACE is and who it is for

The ACE certifies the day-to-day work of running Google Cloud: deploying applications, monitoring operations, and managing enterprise solutions using both the web console and the gcloud command-line tool. It sits in the Associate tier of Google’s scheme — above the foundational certifications like Cloud Digital Leader, below the role-based Professional certifications like Cloud Architect and Data Engineer.

It suits people who work with, or want to work with, GCP hands-on: cloud engineers, systems administrators moving to the cloud, developers who deploy their own infrastructure, and career-changers building a first technical cloud credential. Google recommends roughly six months of hands-on Google Cloud experience, and that recommendation is honest — the exam’s scenarios assume familiarity with how the console and gcloud actually behave, not just what the documentation says. There is no formal prerequisite, so nothing stops a well-prepared newcomer sitting it.

What the exam tests: the four domains

The official exam guide organises the ACE into four domains, and together they describe a working cloud engineer’s job:

  • Setting up a cloud solution environment — creating and configuring projects, managing billing, and installing and configuring the command-line tooling.
  • Planning and implementing a cloud solution — choosing and deploying compute (Compute Engine, GKE, serverless options), storage and database resources, and networking.
  • Ensuring successful operation of a cloud solution — managing running resources, monitoring, logging and day-to-day operations.
  • Configuring access and security — IAM roles and service accounts, and keeping resources appropriately locked down.

How it compares to AWS and Azure equivalents

The ACE is roughly Google Cloud’s counterpart to the hands-on associate certifications on the other clouds — closest in spirit to Azure’s AZ-104 Azure Administrator, which similarly certifies operating a cloud environment day to day, and comparable in level to AWS’s Solutions Architect Associate, though that exam leans more towards designing solutions where the ACE leans towards running them.

The comparison matters mainly for choosing where to invest. All three are respected, associate-level, hands-on credentials, and the underlying concepts — virtual machines, storage classes, identity and access, networking — transfer heavily between them. Logistics: format, fee, delivery, validity

The exam runs about two hours and presents roughly 50 to 60 multiple-choice and multiple-select questions. The fee is about $125 USD at the time of writing — check Google Cloud’s certification page for the current price, as fees change. Exams are delivered by Pearson VUE, at a test centre or online with remote proctoring; Google moved from its previous provider, Kryterion, to Pearson VUE in early 2026, so older booking guides are out of date.

Two scoring facts surprise people coming from AWS or Azure. Google does not publish a numeric passing score — your result is simply pass or fail, with no percentage or scaled score reported — so there is no official threshold to calibrate against. And the certification is valid for three years, after which you recertify by passing the exam again. Both are documented on Google Cloud’s certification site.

How to prepare

Hands-on practice is the core of ACE preparation, because the exam is written from the perspective of someone doing the job. A free-tier Google Cloud account — current terms on Google’s website — lets you create projects, deploy Compute Engine instances and GKE clusters, configure IAM and networking, and use gcloud until its command structure feels natural. Google Cloud Skills Boost, Google’s official learning platform, adds structured courses and hands-on labs that run in real, temporary cloud environments.
