AWS CloudOps Engineer Associate (SOA-C03): a complete guide
The AWS Certified CloudOps Engineer – Associate (SOA-C03) is an associate-level certification for people who operate, monitor and troubleshoot workloads on AWS — the operations counterpart to the design-focused Solutions Architect and the build-focused Developer associates. Where Solutions Architect asks how you would design a system and Developer asks how you would build one, CloudOps Engineer asks how you would keep one running: watching it, fixing it when it breaks, automating the repetitive parts and securing it along the way. What it is and who it is for
SOA-C03 is written for cloud and systems operators — people whose day-to-day work is running production workloads rather than designing or coding them. It replaced the AWS Certified SysOps Administrator – Associate naming (the previous version, SOA-C02, was retired in 2025), though the operational focus carries straight through: monitoring, logging, incident response, automation and reliability. AWS recommends around a year of hands-on AWS operations experience before attempting it, and although there is no formal prerequisite, the exam’s scenarios assume you have actually run something in production, not just read about how to.
It suits cloud operations engineers, systems administrators moving into the cloud, and anyone whose title includes “operations” or “reliability” alongside AWS. If your work involves watching dashboards, responding to alarms, patching and scaling infrastructure, or automating deployments so humans do not have to repeat them by hand, this exam tests exactly that territory.
The five domains
The SOA-C03 blueprint covers five domains — one more than the other AWS associates, reflecting how much ground operations work actually spans:
- Monitoring, Logging, Analysis, Remediation, and Performance Optimization — the largest domain: instrumenting workloads, interpreting what the data shows, and acting on it.
- Reliability and Business Continuity — designing and operating for fault tolerance, backup and disaster recovery.
- Deployment, Provisioning, and Automation — repeatable, automated infrastructure delivery rather than manual, one-off changes.
- Security and Compliance — applying and maintaining the access controls and protections that operations work must not undermine.
- Networking and Content Delivery — configuring and troubleshooting the connectivity that everything else depends on.
What makes it distinctive among the AWS associates
The three AWS associate certifications split cleanly by what they test. Solutions Architect – Associate tests design judgement — choosing the right architecture before anything is built. Developer – Associate tests build competence — writing and deploying applications against AWS services. CloudOps Engineer – Associate tests operational judgement — keeping a live system healthy, observable and recoverable once it exists. None of the three is a subset of another; a solutions architect who has never run an incident response and an operations engineer who has never designed a system genuinely need different exams.
That operations focus is also what makes SOA-C03 the natural credential for people whose job title never says “architect” or “developer” but who are nonetheless deep in AWS every day — the ones who get paged when something goes wrong.
Logistics: fee, format, scoring and validity
SOA-C03 follows the standard AWS associate mechanics. The fee is $150 at the time of writing — check AWS’s pricing page for the current figure — delivered by Pearson VUE at a test centre or online via OnVUE. The exam has 65 questions in 130 minutes, multiple-choice and multiple-response, with no penalty for wrong answers.
Scoring is scaled from 100 to 1000 with a pass mark of 720, compensatory across all five domains — the overall total is what counts, not a per-domain minimum. The certification is valid for three years, passing earns a 50% discount voucher toward your next AWS exam plus a verifiable Credly badge, and a failed attempt means a 14-day wait before rebooking. Non-native English speakers can request a 30-minute extension through their AWS Certification Account before booking.
How it fits a career
SOA-C03 maps most directly onto cloud engineer, CloudOps and site-reliability-adjacent roles — positions where the job is keeping AWS workloads running rather than deciding their shape from scratch. It pairs naturally with the Solutions Architect – Associate: architects design the system, operators keep it alive, and plenty of people do both across a career or even within the same role. Is it worth it?
For anyone whose AWS work is operational — monitoring, incident response, automation, reliability — SOA-C03 is the certification that actually matches the job, which is worth more than a more generically recognised badge that tests a different skill. It will not by itself guarantee a role or a pay rise, and the honest evidence of demand is what live job adverts ask for rather than any invented figure.
