Question 1Manage identity, access, and governance

Contoso has five administrators who hold the User Administrator role permanently. The security team wants them to have no standing privilege: each administrator should obtain the role when a task needs it, for a limited time, and each elevation should be recorded for audit. What should you configure?

Choose one.

  • a
Active time-bound assignments for the role in Microsoft Entra ID

An active assignment with an end date still gives the role continuously until it expires. The administrators would hold it whether or not a task needs it.

  • b
Eligible assignments for the role in Privileged Identity Management Correct

An eligible assignment grants nothing until the user activates it. Activation is time-limited and logged in the PIM audit history, which removes standing privilege.

  • c
A Conditional Access policy that requires MFA for the role holders

MFA strengthens sign-in, but the administrators would still hold the role permanently. It does nothing about standing privilege.

  • d
An access review of the role that recurs each quarter

An access review checks periodically whether people still need the role. Between reviews the assignment remains permanent and active.

The concept

Privileged Identity Management turns permanent role assignments into eligible ones that users activate just in time.

Why that’s the answer

The requirement is no standing privilege plus a time-limited, recorded elevation. That is exactly what an eligible PIM assignment provides: the user holds nothing until they activate, activation expires, and each activation is audited. A time-bound active assignment is the tempting near-twin, but it is still active for its whole lifetime. MFA and access reviews are useful controls that leave the permanent assignment in place.

How to reason it out
  1. Spot the deciding words: no standing privilege, on demand, time-limited, audited.
  2. Recall that only an eligible assignment grants nothing until it is activated.
  3. Rule out controls that leave an active assignment in place, however well protected or reviewed.

Exam tip: No standing privilege means eligible assignments in PIM, activated just in time.

Question 2Secure storage, databases, and networking

Fabrikam's compliance team finds that a legacy line-of-business app still uploads files to a storage account over plain HTTP, and a branch server maps an Azure file share over SMB without encryption. Both connections must be refused from now on. Which storage account setting should you enable?

Choose one.

  • a
    Infrastructure encryption

Infrastructure encryption adds a second layer of encryption at rest; it does nothing to unencrypted traffic in transit.

  • b
    Minimum TLS version

The minimum TLS version applies to connections that already use TLS; it doesn't refuse plain HTTP requests or unencrypted SMB sessions.

  • c
    Customer-managed keys

Customer-managed keys control the key used to encrypt data at rest, not whether clients connect over an encrypted channel.

  • d
    Secure transfer required Correct

This setting makes the account reject REST requests made over HTTP and SMB connections that don't use encryption, which covers both findings.

The concept

Secure transfer required forces encryption in transit for REST (HTTPS only) and SMB (encrypted sessions only).

Why that’s the answer

The two findings are both about data in transit: an HTTP upload and an SMB mapping without encryption. Secure transfer required is the account setting that refuses exactly those requests. Infrastructure encryption and customer-managed keys are encryption-at-rest controls, and the minimum TLS version only constrains connections that are already using TLS, so neither stops plain HTTP.

How to reason it out
  1. Classify the problem: traffic is unencrypted in transit, not at rest.
  2. Recall which setting rejects HTTP and unencrypted SMB.
  3. Discard the at-rest options (infrastructure encryption, customer-managed keys).
  4. Note that a TLS floor doesn't apply to requests that never use TLS.

Exam tip: In transit: Secure transfer required. At rest: Microsoft-managed keys, CMK, infrastructure encryption.

Question 3Secure compute

Before rolling out Microsoft 365 Copilot, a SharePoint administrator at Contoso must list every SharePoint and OneDrive site whose content is broadly exposed today, including sites opened to 'Everyone except external users' years ago. Contoso has SharePoint Advanced Management. Which data access governance report should the administrator run first?

Choose one.

  • a
The 'Everyone except external users' activity report

Activity reports cover only sharing that happened in the last 28 days, so access granted years ago is missed.

  • b
The sharing links activity report for the tenant

This activity report finds sites where many new sharing links were created recently; it is not a baseline of existing permissions.

  • c
The site permissions report for your organization Correct

It is a snapshot of the current permission structure across all SharePoint and OneDrive sites, so it finds broad access regardless of when it was granted.

  • d
The sensitivity labels applied to files report

This snapshot shows which sites hold files with chosen labels; it does not show how broadly each site is shared.

The concept

SharePoint data access governance reports come in two kinds: snapshot reports (current state) and activity reports (the last 28 days).

Why that’s the answer

The requirement is a baseline of existing exposure, including old grants. The site permissions snapshot report analyses the permission structure of every SharePoint and OneDrive site and highlights sites with broad access such as 'Everyone except external users'. The EEEU and sharing-links reports are activity reports that only look back 28 days, so they catch new oversharing but not the backlog. The sensitivity-label report addresses a different question: where labelled files live.

How to reason it out
  1. Decide whether you need current state or recent activity.
  2. Old grants mean current state, so a snapshot report is required.
  3. Of the snapshot reports, only the site permissions report shows how broadly sites are shared.
  4. Use activity reports afterwards to monitor new oversharing.

Exam tip: Baseline exposure: snapshot (site permissions) report. Recent oversharing: activity reports, which look back only 28 days.

Question 4Manage and monitor security posture

A company turned on Microsoft Defender for Cloud for its Azure subscriptions and uses only the free posture features. The security lead now wants to see how an attacker on the internet could chain an exposed, vulnerable virtual machine to a storage account that holds sensitive data. What should you enable first?

Choose one.

  • a
The Defender for Storage plan on the subscriptions

Defender for Storage adds threat detection and malware scanning for storage accounts; it does not map chains of risk across resources.

  • b
Defender for Servers Plan 1 on the subscriptions

Plan 1 brings Defender for Endpoint EDR and agent-based vulnerability scanning, but it does not provide attack path analysis.

  • c
The Defender for Resource Manager plan on the subscriptions

Defender for Resource Manager detects suspicious management-plane operations; it does not model attack paths.

  • d
The Defender CSPM plan on the subscriptions Correct

Attack path analysis, which maps exploitable chains from internet entry points to critical targets, is a Defender CSPM capability that Foundational CSPM does not include.

The concept

Foundational CSPM is free and gives recommendations, the secure score and the Microsoft cloud security benchmark. The paid Defender CSPM plan adds contextual risk tools such as attack path analysis, cloud security explorer and risk prioritization.

Why that’s the answer

The requirement is to see how an internet attacker could move from an exposed VM to sensitive data: that is an attack path. Attack path analysis is listed only under Defender CSPM. Workload plans such as Defender for Storage, Defender for Servers or Defender for Resource Manager detect threats on their own resource types but don't build the cross-resource graph that attack paths come from.

How to reason it out
  1. Recognise the need: a chain from an internet entry point to a sensitive target.
  2. That chain is an attack path.
  3. Check which plan includes attack path analysis: Defender CSPM, not Foundational CSPM.
  4. Workload protection plans protect single resource types and don't model paths.

Exam tip: Attack paths, cloud security explorer and risk prioritization all need the paid Defender CSPM plan.

Question 5Manage identity, access, and governance

Members of the Fabrikam help desk are eligible for the Helpdesk Administrator role in Privileged Identity Management. Auditors report that some members activate the role for a full working day when they need it for a few minutes. You must cap how long an activated role stays active without removing anyone's eligibility. What should you change?

Choose one.

  • a
The eligible assignment expiration in the role settings

This controls when the eligibility itself ends. Shortening it would eventually remove members' eligibility and does not limit each activation.

  • b
The activation maximum duration in the role's PIM settings Correct

Activation maximum duration sets how long an activation lasts before it expires, from 1 to 24 hours. Lowering it caps every activation of this role.

  • c
The sign-in frequency session control in Conditional Access

Sign-in frequency forces reauthentication. The activated role stays active until the PIM activation expires, whatever the session lifetime.

  • d
The access review recurrence for the role's assignments

Access reviews decide whether people keep the eligible assignment. They do not limit how long a single activation lasts.

The concept

PIM role settings: activation maximum duration vs assignment duration.

Why that’s the answer

PIM has two separate clocks. The activation maximum duration (1 to 24 hours) limits each activation; the eligible assignment expiration limits how long a user stays eligible at all. The auditors' problem is long activations, so the activation maximum duration is the setting to lower. Changing eligibility expiration would remove eligibility, which the stem forbids.

How to reason it out
  1. Separate the two durations in PIM: per activation and per assignment.
  2. Match the symptom (activations last too long) to the per-activation setting.
  3. Discard session and review controls, which do not end an active role.

Exam tip: Activation maximum duration caps each elevation; assignment duration caps eligibility.

How SC-500 questions are worded

Most SC-500 questions are not asking whether you can recall a definition. They describe a situation and ask which option satisfies it — so the skill being tested is reading the requirement precisely and eliminating options that fail it.

Single-response vs multiple-response

A single-response question has exactly one right answer. A multiple-response question tells you how many to pick ("Choose TWO") and there is no partial credit — getting one of the two right scores nothing. Read that instruction before you read the options.

Read the last line first

The final sentence is the actual question; everything before it is scenario. Read it first, then read the scenario knowing what you are looking for. It stops you from building an answer in your head that the question never asked for.

Hunt for the qualifier

Most scenarios turn on one word — MOST cost-effective, LEAST operational overhead, with the LEAST latency, without changing application code. Two options are frequently both technically correct, and the qualifier is the only thing separating them.

Eliminate, then choose

Distractors are almost always real Microsoft Azure services doing a real job — just not this job. Rule out the ones that break a stated constraint before you compare what's left. On a question you truly don't know, eliminating two options turns a guess into a coin flip.
