What's in a SC-500 mock paper
Each paper draws its questions per domain in the same proportions Microsoft Azure publishes for the real SC-500 — so a mock that goes badly in one domain is telling you something a randomly-drawn quiz couldn't.
| Domain | Official weight | Questions drawn | Share of paper |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manage identity, access, and governance | 24% | 12 | 24% |
| Secure storage, databases, and networking | 28% | 14 | 28% |
| Secure compute | 24% | 12 | 24% |
| Manage and monitor security posture | 24% | 12 | 24% |
| Total | 100% | 50 | 100% |
What a SC-500 paper is shaped like
Which way this particular paper applies pressure.
The clock
At roughly 2.4 minutes a question, the clock is not the enemy here — the scenarios are. Questions on this paper tend to be longer and more layered, and the time is given to you because you need to read carefully. The failure mode is the opposite of a fast paper: drifting, re-reading, and second-guessing answers you had right the first time.
The weighting
Secure storage, databases, and networking is the largest domain at 28%, but with 4 domains in play no single one decides the result. A mock score here is usually a fair reflection of overall coverage rather than a verdict on one topic.
The standard
The pass mark is 700 on the 100–1000 scale. Because scaling adjusts for the difficulty of the particular set you were served, there is no fixed number of questions that guarantees it — which is exactly why a single mock result means less than a consistent one.

What trips people up on an SC-500 mock
SC-500 questions are rarely about whether a control exists; they are about which control, at which scope. Conditional Access or PIM, a private endpoint or a service endpoint, Azure Policy or a Defender recommendation, an NSG or Azure Firewall — the distractors are all real Microsoft security features, applied in the wrong place. When a mock score disappoints, check whether the misses are wrong products or right products at the wrong layer; the fix for each is different.
Read the requirement words as hard constraints. Least privilege, minimal administrative effort, no exposure to the public internet, enforcement before access is granted — Microsoft writes these into the scenario because they eliminate options that would otherwise work. Candidates who answer from what they would do in their own tenant lose marks here.
Securing AI is new territory compared with the older Azure security exam, and it covers products many people have not deployed: agent identities, data security posture for Copilot and AI apps, guardrails and an AI gateway in front of models. These names and capabilities are recent and still moving, so treat a miss here as a cue to reread the current documentation rather than to rely on memory.
The networking and data domain carries the most weight, and it rewards precise knowledge of how traffic actually flows: what a private endpoint changes about name resolution, which rules Network Watcher reports as effective, where a firewall sits relative to a virtual WAN hub. Diagrams in your head beat definitions here.
Sentinel and Defender for Cloud questions often hide the answer in the data path — which connector, which data collection rule, which workspace, which plan. If you can trace where an event is generated, collected, stored and alerted on, most of the posture-management domain falls into place.
