What's in a PMP mock paper

Each paper draws its questions per domain in the same proportions PMI publishes for the real PMP — so a mock that goes badly in one domain is telling you something a randomly-drawn quiz couldn't.

What a PMP paper is shaped like

Which way this particular paper applies pressure.

The clock

At roughly 1.3 minutes a question, the pacing is comfortable but not generous. You can afford to think on a hard question, and you cannot afford to do it twice. Most candidates finish with time for a second pass if they keep the first pass moving.

The weighting

The weighting is top-heavy: Process alone accounts for 41% of the paper. That concentration cuts both ways on a mock — a bad run in that one domain will sink the whole score, and a good one can flatter you into thinking the rest is covered. Read the per-domain breakdown before you read the total.

The standard

The pass mark is 700 on the 100–1000 scale. Because scaling adjusts for the difficulty of the particular set you were served, there is no fixed number of questions that guarantees it — which is exactly why a single mock result means less than a consistent one.

What trips people up on a PMP mock

The PMP is a judgement exam, not a recall exam. Most questions describe a project situation and ask what the project manager should do, and every option is something a real project manager might do. The wrong answers are not silly; they are actions taken too early, too late, alone, or outside the agreed process. If your misses are spread across topics you know well, that is usually why.

Read for the delivery approach before reading the options. The same problem — a change request, a slipping estimate, an unhappy stakeholder — has a different best answer on a predictive project with a baseline and a change control board than on an agile team with a product owner and a backlog. Most of the paper is set in agile or hybrid work, so candidates who learned project management from a predictive textbook lose marks here first.

The PMI mindset decides close calls: understand the situation before acting, involve the team before escalating, use the agreed process instead of going around it, and keep the focus on value. When two options both look reasonable, the one that skips a step or acts unilaterally is usually the trap.

Business Environment carries far more weight than it did in the previous outline — governance, compliance, organizational change and changes outside the project. Many people still revise it as an afterthought, so it is often the domain where a mock score drops below the others.

Stamina is part of the test. The paper is long enough that concentration fades well before the end, and the questions do not get easier to compensate. Sit full-length mocks in one go, take the breaks the real exam gives you, and check whether your accuracy in the last third holds up.
