What's in a CCSP mock paper
Each paper draws its questions per domain in the same proportions ISC2 publishes for the real CCSP — so a mock that goes badly in one domain is telling you something a randomly-drawn quiz couldn't.
| Domain | Official weight | Questions drawn | Share of paper |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cloud Concepts, Architecture and Design | 17% | 26 | 17% |
| Cloud Data Security | 20% | 30 | 20% |
| Cloud Platform & Infrastructure Security | 17% | 26 | 17% |
| Cloud Application Security | 16% | 24 | 16% |
| Cloud Security Operations | 17% | 25 | 17% |
| Legal, Risk and Compliance | 13% | 19 | 13% |
| Total | 100% | 150 | 100% |
What a CCSP paper is shaped like
Which way this particular paper applies pressure.
The clock
At roughly 1.2 minutes a question, this is one of the faster papers you can sit. There is no time to deliberate: you read, decide, and move. Candidates who fail this format usually knew the material and ran out of clock, so treat pacing as a skill to rehearse in its own right rather than something that will sort itself out on the day.
The weighting
The weighting is unusually flat — 6 domains with no single one dominating, the largest being Cloud Data Security at 20%. Nothing can be safely skipped, and there is no high-weight domain to carry a gap. Breadth beats depth on this paper.
The standard
The pass mark is 700 on the 100–1000 scale. Because scaling adjusts for the difficulty of the particular set you were served, there is no fixed number of questions that guarantees it — which is exactly why a single mock result means less than a consistent one.
Pacing a CCSP paper
Where you need to be on the clock, quarter by quarter.
| Checkpoint | Elapsed | Be at question | Questions left |
|---|---|---|---|
| First quarter | 45 min | 38 | 112 |
| Halfway | 90 min | 75 | 75 |
| Three quarters | 135 min | 113 | 37 |
| Time called | 180 min | 150 | 0 |
What trips people up on a CCSP mock
CCSP is vendor-neutral, so no question is answered by knowing how one provider behaves. Items describe a situation and ask what a cloud security professional should do, and the right answer is the one that holds on any platform and fits the service model in the stem. Candidates with deep experience of one cloud often miss items because they answer with that provider’s feature rather than the principle behind it.
Most items are scenarios in which several options are real controls. The deciding factor is usually who is responsible under the service model, what comes first in the process, or which option deals with the risk actually named. Classifying data comes before protecting it, assessing a provider before signing with it, and a contract term or an audit report is often the control that matters most when the customer cannot touch the infrastructure.
Cloud data security is the largest domain, and much of it is about the data lifecycle, discovery, classification and rights management rather than encryption alone. Legal, risk and compliance is the smallest, but it is the one candidates from technical backgrounds most often leave until last, and its questions on audit reports, privacy law, eDiscovery and contracts are precise in ways that experience alone does not teach.
The current outline adds AI and machine learning to two domains: securing AI workloads in cloud architecture, and protecting the data used to train and run models. Study material written for the earlier outline does not cover either. If those topics trail on your mocks while the rest is steady, the cause is a gap in your material, and the lessons close it quickly.
The real exam is adaptive: you answer each question in order and cannot flag one or go back. Sit at least some of your mocks the same way, committing to each answer as you go, because the habit of deferring hard items is the one the exam will not let you use.
