What's in a SOA-C03 mock paper
Each paper draws its questions per domain in the same proportions AWS publishes for the real SOA-C03 — so a mock that goes badly in one domain is telling you something a randomly-drawn quiz couldn't.
| Domain | Official weight | Questions drawn | Share of paper |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monitoring, Logging, Analysis, Remediation, and Performance Optimization | 22% | 14 | 22% |
| Reliability and Business Continuity | 22% | 14 | 22% |
| Deployment, Provisioning, and Automation | 22% | 14 | 22% |
| Security and Compliance | 16% | 11 | 17% |
| Networking and Content Delivery | 18% | 12 | 18% |
| Total | 100% | 65 | 100% |
What a SOA-C03 paper is shaped like
Which way this particular paper applies pressure.
The clock
At roughly 2 minutes a question, the clock is not the enemy here — the scenarios are. Questions on this paper tend to be longer and more layered, and the time is given to you because you need to read carefully. The failure mode is the opposite of a fast paper: drifting, re-reading, and second-guessing answers you had right the first time.
The weighting
The weighting is unusually flat — 5 domains with no single one dominating, the largest being Monitoring, Logging, Analysis, Remediation, and Performance Optimization at 22%. Nothing can be safely skipped, and there is no high-weight domain to carry a gap. Breadth beats depth on this paper.
The standard
The pass mark is 720 on the 100–1000 scale. Because scaling adjusts for the difficulty of the particular set you were served, there is no fixed number of questions that guarantees it — which is exactly why a single mock result means less than a consistent one.
Pacing a SOA-C03 paper
Where you need to be on the clock, quarter by quarter.

| First quarter | 33 min | 16 | 49 |
| Halfway | 65 min | 33 | 32 |
| Three quarters | 98 min | 49 | 16 |

What trips people up on an SOA-C03 mock
This is the flattest weighting of the AWS associates: the domains sit close together, and the paper genuinely ranges across all of them. There is no high-weight domain to carry a gap, so the usual associate tactic of going deep on the biggest domain does not pay here. Broad, even coverage is what the score rewards.
CloudOps questions are operational rather than architectural. They tend to start from something already running and slightly wrong, and ask what you would do about it — which means the exam is testing diagnosis, remediation and the order you do things in, not design. Candidates coming from the Solutions Architect exam often carry the design instinct over and pick the option that would have been the better original build rather than the correct fix.
Because the domains are even, per-domain review after a mock is unusually informative: a single weak domain is both easy to spot and cheap to close, and it moves the total more than it would on a top-heavy paper.
Monitoring, logging and remediation is the domain that most rewards knowing exactly which tool emits which signal. Questions frequently hinge on where a particular piece of information would even appear, and candidates who have read about the services without ever looking at their output find these unexpectedly hard. If that domain trails on a mock, the gap is usually observability plumbing rather than the services themselves.
Automation questions reward knowing what runs without a human present. Because the exam is operational, the correct answer is often the one that removes the manual step rather than the one that fixes the immediate problem — a distinction worth checking your wrong answers against explicitly after each paper.
