Why hands-on practice is non-negotiable
The ACE tests operational familiarity: which gcloud command family does what, where a setting lives in the console, what IAM role a task actually requires, what happens when you deploy this way rather than that way. Those instincts come only from doing. Google recommends around six months of hands-on experience for a reason — but deliberate practice in a free-tier account can compress much of that if you are systematic.
Open a free-tier Google Cloud account — the current terms are on Google’s website — and work through the domains practically: create and organise projects, deploy Compute Engine instances and a GKE cluster, set up Cloud Storage buckets, configure VPC networking, create service accounts and grant IAM roles, and do as much as possible twice — once in the console, once with gcloud. The command-line repetition matters: the exam expects you to recognise gcloud’s structure, and that recognition only comes from having typed it.

Understand the exam you are walking into
The exam runs about two hours with roughly 50 to 60 multiple-choice and multiple-select questions. Many are scenario-flavoured: a short situation — a team needs X deployed with Y constraint — followed by options that are all plausible, where the right answer is the one matching Google’s recommended practice for that situation. Multiple-select questions tell you how many options to choose; there is no trick in the counting, only in the judgement.
One scoring fact should shape your preparation: Google does not publish a numeric passing score. Your result is simply pass or fail. That means you cannot calibrate against an official threshold the way you can with AWS or Azure exams — so the only honest strategy is to prepare to a comfortable margin. If your practice performance is consistently strong with room to spare, an unpublished threshold stops mattering.
Booking, logistics and exam day
Google Cloud exams are delivered by Pearson VUE — Google moved from its previous provider, Kryterion, in early 2026, so disregard older guides describing Webassessor booking. You can sit the exam at a test centre or online with remote proctoring; if you choose online, run the system test early and prepare a quiet, clear room, as proctoring requirements are strict. The fee is about $125 USD at the time of writing — check Google’s certification page for the current price before booking.
On the day, manage the clock rather than racing it: two hours across 50 to 60 questions is a comfortable pace if you keep moving. Flag anything uncertain and return to it — a later question sometimes jogs the memory a stuck one needs. Answer everything; an educated elimination beats a blank.
How to know when you are ready
The readiness signal is consistency on full-length, timed mock exams. One good score can be luck; comfortable results across several mocks, sat under exam conditions, is evidence. Since Google publishes no passing score, set your own bar high enough that the question of scraping past never arises — and treat every mock review as study, spending longer on the questions you got wrong than the ones you got right.
Pair that with a practical self-test: could you, right now, set up a new project, deploy a small workload to Compute Engine and GKE, configure the IAM access it needs, and check its logs and monitoring — without looking anything up? If both signals are green, book the exam. A committed date sharpens the final stretch of preparation better than any resource.
