The most common failure pattern is over-confidence from general AI exposure. Using chatbots daily and following AI news builds familiarity, not exam readiness — the exam asks for precise distinctions (the difference between fine-tuning and retrieval-augmented generation, between AI and ML and deep learning, between types of learning) that casual exposure never sharpens. The second trap is under-weighting the less glamorous domains. Responsible AI and security-and-governance are scored domains with real question share, and they have their own vocabulary — bias sources, explainability, human-in-the-loop, guardrails, data protection for AI workloads — that must be studied on its own terms. The third is AWS-service specifics: the exam is conceptual, but it is still an AWS exam, and it expects you to know which AWS service addresses which AI need. The AI and ML fundamentals and generative-AI domains are the conceptual core: definitions, relationships and limitations, learned to the point where you could explain them to a colleague unprompted. The foundation-model applications domain is where AWS-specific study concentrates: prompt engineering, customisation approaches, RAG and the Bedrock capability set, always framed as “what is this for and when would I choose it”.
Then give responsible AI and security-and-governance the same seriousness. These domains reward exactly the kind of structured study most candidates skip: learn the principles as a checklist (fairness, transparency, safety, privacy, accountability, human oversight), the mechanisms that implement them (guardrails, review processes, access control), and the governance questions organisations face when adopting AI. Between them, the two “unglamorous” domains often decide the result for candidates who breezed through the fundamentals.
Exam mechanics and the readiness signal
Mechanics are standard for an AWS foundational exam: 65 questions, of which 15 are unscored experimental items you cannot identify, in multiple-choice and multiple-response formats. Scoring is scaled from 100 to 1000 with a pass mark of 700, and the model is compensatory — strength in one domain offsets weakness in another. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so never leave a question blank; an eliminated-down guess is free score potential. Delivery is through Pearson VUE, at a test centre or online, and a 14-day wait applies before any retake.
