6 sample Infrastructure questions, fully explained

Questions from the FC0-U71 bank mapped to domain 2, with the answer key and the reasoning behind every option. None of them repeat the examples on the main FC0-U71 practice page.

Question 1Infrastructure

A sales rep travels often and needs one portable device with a built-in keyboard and touchpad that runs full desktop applications. Which device is best to use?

Choose one.

  • a
    Smartphone

A smartphone is portable but runs mobile apps on a small touchscreen; it has no built-in keyboard or touchpad.

  • b
    Workstation

A workstation runs demanding desktop applications, but it is a desk-bound computer, not a portable device.

  • c
    Laptop Correct

A laptop is a portable computer with the keyboard and touchpad built into its case, and it runs a full desktop operating system and its applications.

  • d
    Tablet

A tablet is portable and some can take a keyboard cover, but the keyboard and touchpad are add-on accessories, not built in, and most tablets run mobile apps.

The concept

Laptops are portable general-purpose computers with an integrated keyboard and pointing device and a full desktop operating system.

Why that’s the answer

The rep needs portability, a built-in keyboard and touchpad, and full desktop applications. A laptop combines all three. A tablet is the tempting near-twin, but its keyboard is an optional accessory and it usually runs mobile apps; a workstation runs the software but stays on a desk; a smartphone is portable but has neither the keyboard nor desktop applications.

How to reason it out
  1. Note the three requirements: portable, built-in keyboard and touchpad, desktop applications.
  2. Remove the device that is not portable (workstation).
  3. Compare the portable devices: only the laptop has the keyboard and touchpad built in and runs a full desktop OS.
  4. Choose the laptop.

Exam tip: Portable plus built-in keyboard and touchpad plus full desktop apps describes a laptop, not a tablet.

Question 2Infrastructure

A video editor needs a powerful desktop computer for rendering large projects at her own desk. Which device type best describes this computer?

Choose one.

  • a
    Server

A server also has powerful hardware, but its purpose is to provide services or resources to many client computers over a network, not one person's editing at a desk.

  • b
    Workstation Correct

A workstation is a high-performance computer used by one person for demanding work such as video editing, 3D design or engineering.

  • c
    Gaming console

A gaming console has a strong GPU, but it is a closed device for playing games and cannot run professional video-editing software.

  • d
    Laptop

A laptop is portable and can edit video, but the editor asked for a powerful desktop computer at her desk.

The concept

A workstation is a high-end computer used by a single person for demanding professional tasks.

Why that’s the answer

The clues are a powerful computer, a single user and demanding creative work at a desk. That is the definition of a workstation. A server can be just as powerful, but it exists to serve many clients over a network. A gaming console has a strong GPU but runs only games, and a laptop is the portable option the stem did not ask for.

How to reason it out
  1. Identify who uses the computer: one person at her own desk.
  2. Identify the workload: demanding rendering that needs a strong CPU, GPU and RAM.
  3. Separate a workstation (powerful, one user) from a server (powerful, serves many clients).
  4. Choose the workstation.

Exam tip: Powerful computer + one user + demanding work = workstation; powerful computer + many clients = server.

Question 3Infrastructure

Which of the following best describes a system that adds digital objects to a live view of the real world?

Choose one.

  • a
    Augmented reality Correct

Augmented reality adds digital content, such as a 3D model or directions, on top of a live view of the real world, for example through a phone camera or smart glasses.

  • b
    Virtual reality

Virtual reality replaces the user's view with a fully simulated world, usually through a headset; it does not keep the real world in view.

  • c
    Screen mirroring

Screen mirroring copies one device's display to another screen, such as a TV; it does not place digital objects into a live view of the real world.

  • d
    Video conferencing

Video conferencing carries live audio and video between participants; it does not place digital objects into a live view of the real world.

The concept

Augmented reality overlays digital content on the user's real-world view; virtual reality replaces that view entirely.

Why that’s the answer

The system keeps the real world in view and adds digital objects to it. Adding to the real view is augmented reality. Virtual reality is the tempting near-twin, but it shuts out the real world and shows only a simulated one. Screen mirroring and video conferencing are real technologies that do different jobs.

How to reason it out
  1. Ask whether the user still sees the real world: yes, it is a live view.
  2. Ask whether digital content is added on top of it: yes, digital objects.
  3. Real world plus added digital content is augmented reality.
  4. Choose augmented reality.

Exam tip: Augmented reality adds to the real view; virtual reality replaces it.

Question 4Infrastructure

A flight school wants trainees in headsets that fully replace their view of the room with a simulated cockpit. Which system is best to use?

Choose one.

  • a
    Virtual reality Correct

A virtual reality system uses a headset to replace the user's view with a fully simulated, interactive environment such as a cockpit.

  • b
    Augmented reality

Augmented reality keeps the real room in view and overlays digital content on it; the school wants the room completely replaced.

  • c
    Gaming console

A gaming console runs games on a TV or monitor; some support VR accessories, but the console itself does not replace the user's view.

  • d
    Workstation

A workstation is a powerful desktop computer; it could generate a simulation, but on its own it shows it on a monitor, not in an immersive headset.

The concept

Virtual reality immerses the user in a fully simulated environment through a headset, shutting out the real surroundings.

Why that’s the answer

The requirement is a headset that completely replaces what the trainee sees. That full immersion is virtual reality. Augmented reality is the near-twin, but it keeps the real world visible and adds to it. A gaming console or a workstation can drive content on a screen, but neither is the immersive system itself.

How to reason it out
  1. Find the deciding phrase: the view of the room is completely replaced.
  2. Recall that virtual reality replaces the real view and augmented reality only adds to it.
  3. Rule out devices that show content on a screen rather than immersing the user.
  4. Choose virtual reality.

Exam tip: If the real world disappears and a simulated one takes its place, it is virtual reality.

Question 5Infrastructure

A homeowner wants to see and talk to visitors at the front door from a phone while at work. Which device would best meet this requirement?

Choose one.

  • a
    Smart door lock

A smart door lock can be locked or unlocked from a phone, but it has no camera or speaker, so the homeowner cannot see or talk to the visitor.

  • b
    Home assistant

A home assistant (smart speaker) answers voice commands inside the house; it does not show who is at the front door.

  • c
    Video doorbell Correct

A video doorbell has a camera, microphone and speaker and connects to an app, so the homeowner can see and talk to visitors from anywhere.

  • d
    Smart thermostat

A smart thermostat controls heating and cooling from a phone; it has nothing to do with seeing or talking to visitors.

The concept

Smart-home IoT devices each do one job: a video doorbell provides remote two-way video at the door.

Why that’s the answer

Seeing and talking to a visitor remotely needs a camera, a microphone, a speaker and an internet connection at the door, which is exactly what a video doorbell provides. A smart door lock is the closest distractor, because it is also controlled from a phone at the front door, but it only locks and unlocks. A home assistant and a smart thermostat are other smart-home devices with different jobs.

How to reason it out
  1. List what is needed: video and two-way audio at the door, from a remote phone.
  2. Match each smart-home device to its job: lock/unlock, voice commands, temperature, door video.
  3. Pick the device with a camera, microphone and speaker at the door.
  4. Choose the video doorbell.

Exam tip: Remote video and two-way talk at the front door = video doorbell; remote lock/unlock = smart lock.

Question 6Infrastructure

A family wants the heating to turn down when the house is empty and to be adjustable from a phone. Which device is best to use?

Choose one.

  • a
    Home assistant

A home assistant can pass voice commands to a smart thermostat, but it does not control the heating itself; the thermostat is still needed.

  • b
    Video doorbell

A video doorbell shows and records visitors at the door; it does not control heating.

  • c
    Smart lighting hub

A smart lighting hub controls lights on schedules or from a phone, but it does not control heating.

  • d
    Smart thermostat Correct

A smart thermostat controls the heating system, can follow schedules or detect when the home is empty, and is adjustable from a phone app.

The concept

A smart thermostat is an IoT device that controls heating and cooling automatically and remotely.

Why that’s the answer

The family wants the heating controlled automatically and from a phone. The device that controls a heating system is a thermostat, and a smart (networked) thermostat adds schedules, away detection and app control. A home assistant is the tempting distractor because it can talk to a thermostat, but without one it has nothing to control. A video doorbell and a smart lighting hub are smart-home devices with different jobs.

How to reason it out
  1. Identify the system being controlled: heating.
  2. Recall which device controls heating: a thermostat.
  3. Note that a home assistant only relays commands to other devices.
  4. Choose the smart thermostat.

Exam tip: Heating controlled from a phone or by schedule = smart thermostat; a home assistant only relays commands to it.
