What's in a FC0-U71 mock paper
Each paper draws its questions per domain in the same proportions CompTIA publishes for the real FC0-U71 — so a mock that goes badly in one domain is telling you something a randomly-drawn quiz couldn't.
| Domain | Official weight | Questions drawn | Share of paper |
|---|---|---|---|
| IT Concepts and Terminology | 13% | 9 | 13% |
| Infrastructure | 24% | 17 | 24% |
| Applications and Software | 18% | 13 | 19% |
| Software Development Concepts | 13% | 9 | 13% |
| Data and Database Fundamentals | 13% | 9 | 13% |
| Security | 19% | 13 | 19% |
| Total | 100% | 70 | 100% |
What a FC0-U71 paper is shaped like
Which way this particular paper applies pressure.
The clock
At roughly 0.9 minutes a question, this is one of the faster papers you can sit. There is no time to deliberate: you read, decide, and move. Candidates who fail this format usually knew the material and ran out of clock, so treat pacing as a skill to rehearse in its own right rather than something that will sort itself out on the day.
The weighting
Infrastructure is the largest domain at 24%, but with 6 domains in play no single one decides the result. A mock score here is usually a fair reflection of overall coverage rather than a verdict on one topic.
The standard
The pass mark is 650 on the 100–900 scale. Because scaling adjusts for the difficulty of the particular set you were served, there is no fixed number of questions that guarantees it — which is exactly why a single mock result means less than a consistent one.

What trips people up on a CompTIA Tech+ mock
CompTIA Tech+ questions are short, and the options are often single words — a connector, a protocol, a storage type, a unit. That makes the exam feel easy and then punishes guessing: every option is a real term from the same family, and only one fits the detail in the question. When you miss one, ask which word in the question ruled out the option you picked.
Watch the small qualifiers. "Best", "most likely" and "best meets this requirement" carry most of the weight, because two options are often partly true. Read the whole question, decide what it is really asking for, then choose the option that fits that need most closely, not the one that is merely correct in general.
Infrastructure is the heaviest domain and the broadest: devices, internal components, storage, peripherals, ports and connectors, cloud models, internet service types and basic networking. Misses here are usually vocabulary gaps rather than understanding gaps, so a few focused passes on connectors, storage types and network devices pay off quickly.
The calculation-style questions — converting between binary, decimal and hexadecimal, or between bits and bytes — have exactly one right answer and reward care, not speed. Convert everything to the same base or unit before you compare, and check whether a speed is written in bits or bytes.
Security carries nearly a fifth of the paper and is written around everyday situations: a suspicious email, a weak password, an unsecured home Wi-Fi network. The troubleshooting steps also appear as an ordered sequence — learn the order exactly, because questions ask what to do next, not just what the steps are.
