6 sample Network Services and Security questions, fully explained

Questions from the CCNA bank mapped to domain 4, with the answer key and the reasoning behind every option. None of them repeat the examples on the main CCNA practice page.

Question 1Network Services and Security

Switch SW1 does not use AAA. It already has local accounts created with username ... secret, RSA keys and SSH version 2. The team wants remote management sessions to prompt for one of those usernames and wants Telnet connections to the switch refused. Which configuration under line vty 0 15 meets both goals?

Choose one.

  • a
login followed by transport input ssh

login on its own checks the line password, not the local username database.

  • b
login local followed by transport input telnet ssh

The local database is used, but Telnet is still accepted, which breaks the second goal.

  • c
login followed by transport input telnet ssh

Both goals fail: login checks only the line password, and Telnet is still accepted.

  • d
login local followed by transport input ssh Correct

login local checks the username database, and transport input ssh accepts only inbound SSH.

The concept

Without AAA, VTY lines authenticate with login (line password) or login local (username database); transport input chooses accepted protocols.

Why that’s the answer

login local makes the VTY lines prompt for a username and check it against the local accounts. transport input ssh limits inbound sessions to SSH, so Telnet is refused. Plain login uses only the line password, and transport input telnet ssh still accepts Telnet, so each of the other options breaks at least one goal.

How to reason it out
  1. Map 'prompt for a username from the local accounts' to login local.
  2. Map 'refuse Telnet' to transport input ssh.
  3. Check that the chosen option gets both settings right.

Exam tip: Local accounts on VTY = login local; SSH only = transport input ssh.

Question 2Network Services and Security

An engineer is moving router R2 from line passwords to AAA. When they enter aaa authentication login default group tacacs+ local in global configuration mode, IOS rejects it as an unrecognised command. Which command must be entered first?

Choose one.

  • a
    aaa new-model Correct

aaa new-model turns on the AAA subsystem. The other aaa authentication, authorization and accounting commands become available after it.

  • b
    tacacs server ISE1

This defines a server, but IOS still rejects aaa authentication commands until AAA itself is turned on.

  • c
    ip domain name example.com

A domain name is needed to generate RSA keys for SSH, but it does not enable the AAA commands.

  • d
    aaa group server tacacs+ TAC-GRP

Server groups are also AAA configuration. IOS does not accept this command either until AAA is turned on.

The concept

aaa new-model enables AAA on IOS; it is the prerequisite for every other aaa command.

Why that’s the answer

AAA is off by default on IOS. aaa new-model enables it, and only then are aaa authentication, aaa authorization, aaa accounting and aaa group server accepted. Defining a TACACS+ server or a server group does not turn AAA on, and the domain name belongs to SSH key generation.

How to reason it out
  1. Note that the error is about the aaa command itself.
  2. Recall that AAA is disabled until aaa new-model.
  3. Reject other AAA-related commands that also depend on AAA being enabled.

Exam tip: Nothing aaa works until aaa new-model is configured.

Question 3Network Services and Security

In a lab, router R3 is still managed with Telnet. Its VTY lines have password Lab123 and login. An engineer enters aaa new-model and creates username tech secret T3chPass, but configures no aaa authentication commands. What happens at the next Telnet login to R3?

Choose one.

  • a
R3 prompts for a username and checks it against the local accounts Correct

With AAA on and no default login list, IOS checks only the local user database, so tech can log in and the line password is no longer used.

  • b
R3 keeps asking for the line password until a login list is defined

Once aaa new-model is entered, the line password and login command no longer control VTY authentication.

  • c
R3 refuses Telnet logins until a login method list is defined

IOS does not lock out the lines. With no default list, it falls back to the local user database.

  • d
R3 accepts Telnet sessions without asking for a credential

AAA does not turn authentication off. Without a list, the local user database is still checked.

The concept

Enabling AAA replaces line-password authentication; with no default list, IOS uses the local user database.

Why that’s the answer

After aaa new-model, VTY authentication is controlled by AAA method lists, and the old line password plus login stops applying. If no default login list exists, IOS checks only the local user database. That is why local accounts should exist before AAA is enabled on a remotely managed device: without one, the engineer can lock themselves out.

How to reason it out
  1. Recall that aaa new-model hands line authentication to AAA.
  2. Recall the behaviour when no default list exists: local database only.
  3. Match that to the account the engineer created.

Exam tip: aaa new-model + no login list = local usernames; create a local account before enabling AAA remotely.

Question 4Network Services and Security

Router R4 has this configuration. TACACS+ server ISE1 is reachable, but its logs show no requests from R4, and admins can SSH in only with R4's local accounts.aaa new-model tacacs server ISE1 address ipv4 10.10.5.20 key T4cKey!9 aaa authentication login ADMIN-SSH group tacacs+ local line vty 0 15 transport input sshWhich change makes SSH logins use ISE1?

Choose one.

  • a
Globally, add aaa authorization exec ADMIN-SSH group tacacs+ local

This defines an authorization list. It neither changes authentication nor applies anything to the VTY lines.

  • b
Under line vty 0 15, add login authentication ADMIN-SSH Correct

A named list does nothing until a line references it. Applying ADMIN-SSH makes VTY logins try TACACS+ first.

  • c
Globally, reorder the list as aaa authentication login ADMIN-SSH local group tacacs+

The order is already right. The list is simply never applied, so its order does not matter.

  • d
Globally, add aaa accounting exec ADMIN-SSH start-stop group tacacs+

Accounting records sessions after login. It does not decide how users are authenticated.

The concept

Named method lists must be applied to lines; lines without one use the default list, or the local database if there is none.

Why that’s the answer

aaa authentication login ADMIN-SSH defines a named list, but no line uses it, so the VTY lines fall back to the default list. There is no default list here, so IOS checks only the local database, which is exactly the symptom. Adding login authentication ADMIN-SSH under the VTY lines applies the list. Authorization and accounting lists do not change authentication, and reordering an unused list changes nothing.

How to reason it out
  1. Notice that the list is named, not default.
  2. Look for a login authentication command on the lines and find none.
  3. Recall that unreferenced named lists are ignored.
  4. Apply the list to the VTY lines.

Exam tip: Default lists apply automatically; named lists apply only where login authentication NAME is configured.

Question 5Network Services and Security

Router R5 uses aaa authentication login default group tacacs+ local for all logins. During a WAN outage, engineers at the console waited through TACACS+ timeouts before they could log in. The console must now go straight to R5's local accounts, while VTY logins keep using TACACS+ with local fallback. Which two changes meet this? (Select TWO.)

Choose TWO.

  • a
Globally, change the default list to aaa authentication login default local

This makes the console local-only, but the VTY lines also use the default list, so they would stop using TACACS+.

  • b
Under line vty 0 15, add login authentication CONSOLE

This sends VTY logins to the local-only list, which breaks the TACACS+ requirement for remote access.

  • c
Globally, add aaa authentication enable default local

This changes how the enable command is checked, not how users log in at the console.

  • d
Globally, add aaa authentication login CONSOLE local Correct

This creates a separate named list that uses only the local database.

  • e
Under line con 0, add login authentication CONSOLE Correct

This applies the local-only list to the console, so it no longer uses the default list.

The concept

Different lines can use different authentication lists: keep the default for VTY and apply a named list to the console.

Why that’s the answer

The default list applies to every line without its own list. To give the console different behaviour, define a named list that uses only the local database and apply it under line con 0 with login authentication. Changing the default list would also change the VTY lines, and applying the console list to VTY breaks the remote requirement. The enable list controls enable authentication, not login.

How to reason it out
  1. Identify which lines currently use the default list: all of them.
  2. Leave the default list for the VTY lines.
  3. Create a local-only named list.
  4. Apply it to line con 0 only.

Exam tip: To treat one line differently, create a named list and apply it to that line; leave the default for the rest.

Question 6Network Services and Security

Switch SW2 uses aaa authentication login default group tacacs+ local. The TACACS+ server is up and answering. Contractor jlee has an account in SW2's local database but no account on the TACACS+ server. What happens when jlee tries to SSH to SW2 with the correct local password?

Choose one.

  • a
The login succeeds, because SW2 tries local after the server rejects

This is the common misconception. A reject from a working server ends the attempt; local is not tried.

  • b
The login succeeds, because local accounts are checked before the server

The list names the TACACS+ group first, so the server is asked first and its answer is final.

  • c
The login is rejected, because local accounts are limited to the console line

Local accounts work on any line. Here the local method is never reached, because the server answered.

  • d
The login is rejected, because the server answered with a reject Correct

The server responded, so its reject is final. IOS tries local only when no server responds.

The concept

In an AAA method list, the next method is tried only after an error (no response), never after a fail (reject).

Why that’s the answer

IOS moves down a method list only when a method returns an error, such as every TACACS+ server timing out. When a server answers with a reject, the attempt fails and local is not consulted. jlee exists only locally, the server is reachable and rejects the unknown user, so the login fails. Local accounts here act purely as a fallback for server outages.

How to reason it out
  1. Note that the server is reachable and answering.
  2. Recall that a reject is a fail, which stops the list.
  3. Conclude that the local database is never consulted.

Exam tip: Fallback happens on silence, not on rejection: group tacacs+ local uses local only when no server answers.
