What's in a Databricks GenAI mock paper
Each paper draws its questions per domain in the same proportions Databricks publishes for the real Databricks GenAI — so a mock that goes badly in one domain is telling you something a randomly-drawn quiz couldn't.
| Domain | Official weight | Questions drawn | Share of paper |
|---|---|---|---|
| Design Applications | 14% | 6 | 13% |
| Data Preparation | 14% | 6 | 13% |
| Application Development | 30% | 14 | 31% |
| Assembling and Deploying Applications | 22% | 10 | 22% |
| Governance | 8% | 4 | 9% |
| Evaluation and Monitoring | 12% | 5 | 11% |
| Total | 100% | 45 | 100% |
What a Databricks GenAI paper is shaped like
Which way this particular paper applies pressure.
The clock
At roughly 2 minutes a question, the clock is not the enemy here — the scenarios are. Questions on this paper tend to be longer and more layered, and the time is given to you because you need to read carefully. The failure mode is the opposite of a fast paper: drifting, re-reading, and second-guessing answers you had right the first time.
The weighting
Application Development is the largest domain at 30%, but with 6 domains in play no single one decides the result. A mock score here is usually a fair reflection of overall coverage rather than a verdict on one topic.
The standard
The pass mark is 700 on the 100–1000 scale. Because scaling adjusts for the difficulty of the particular set you were served, there is no fixed number of questions that guarantees it — which is exactly why a single mock result means less than a consistent one.

What trips people up on a Databricks GenAI mock
This exam rewards knowing how Databricks wants a generative AI application built, not just how RAG works in general. Many options describe approaches that would work somewhere; the right one uses the Databricks tool built for the job — Vector Search rather than a hand-rolled store, MLflow and Unity Catalog for the model lifecycle, Model Serving and AI Gateway for deployment and control. Generic LLM experience gets you halfway.
Application development carries the most weight, and its questions are trade-offs: which model for this latency and cost, which embedding context length for these documents, which chunking strategy for this retrieval result. Read the stated constraint first — scale, latency, cost or accuracy — because it is what eliminates the otherwise reasonable options.
Vector Search configuration is a frequent source of misses. Know the difference between endpoint types, between indexes that sync from a Delta table and those you write to directly, and what hybrid search and re-ranking change. Questions combine these settings, so one wrong assumption costs the whole answer.
Evaluation and monitoring questions turn on the MLflow tooling: which judges need ground truth, how tracing and custom scorers fit together, and what inference tables and AI Gateway record. Candidates who have only built prototypes, never measured them, find this section harder than its weight suggests.
Some questions ask for two answers. On those, both choices must be right for the mark, so when one option is clearly correct, look harder at the second rather than picking the nearest neighbour.
