What's in a SC-200 mock paper

Each paper draws its questions per domain in the same proportions Microsoft Azure publishes for the real SC-200 — so a mock that goes badly in one domain is telling you something a randomly-drawn quiz couldn't.

What a SC-200 paper is shaped like

Which way this particular paper applies pressure.

The clock

At roughly 2 minutes a question, the clock is not the enemy here — the scenarios are. Questions on this paper tend to be longer and more layered, and the time is given to you because you need to read carefully. The failure mode is the opposite of a fast paper: drifting, re-reading, and second-guessing answers you had right the first time.

The weighting

The weighting is top-heavy: Manage a security operations environment alone accounts for 42% of the paper. That concentration cuts both ways on a mock — a bad run in that one domain will sink the whole score, and a good one can flatter you into thinking the rest is covered. Read the per-domain breakdown before you read the total.

The standard

The pass mark is 700 on the 1–1000 scale. Because scaling adjusts for the difficulty of the particular set you were served, there is no fixed number of questions that guarantees it — which is exactly why a single mock result means less than a consistent one.

What trips people up on an SC-200 mock

SC-200 is an analyst exam, and most items ask which tool or setting does the job, not whether a feature exists. An automation rule or a playbook, a scheduled or a near-real-time analytics rule, a custom detection in Defender XDR or an analytics rule in Sentinel, the Analytics tier or the data lake: the distractors are real features used for the wrong task. When a mock score disappoints, sort the misses by these pairs. A gap usually shows up as the same confusion repeated, not as random errors.

Managing the security operations environment is the largest domain by a clear margin, and it is the most configuration-heavy: notification and tuning rules, Defender for Endpoint device groups and automation levels, connectors and data collection rules, retention tiers and analytics rules. Candidates who mainly work incidents tend to score best on response and worst here. If that is your pattern, spend the next week in the settings pages rather than the incident queue.

KQL questions reward reading more than writing. You need to pick the right table for a question, spot the operator that filters, joins or summarises, and tell what a query returns. Learning the main Defender XDR and Sentinel tables and what each one records gains more marks than memorising syntax. When you miss a KQL item, check whether the problem was the table or the logic. They need different fixes.

The outline changes often, and the current one leans on recent features: the Sentinel data lake with KQL jobs and summary rules, Sentinel Graph, notebooks connected to the Sentinel MCP Server, agentic investigation with Security Copilot, case management and automatic attack disruption. Sentinel is also moving from the Azure portal into the Defender portal. Older courses describe the Azure portal flow and miss most of these topics. A miss on a feature you have never seen is usually a resource gap, and the current Microsoft Learn page closes it quickly.

Many items are "select TWO" or ask for a sequence, and each correct option usually solves a different part of the requirement. Read the requirement words as hard constraints: minimize administrative effort, least privilege, minimize ingestion cost, act before an analyst reviews. Microsoft writes them in because they rule out an option that would otherwise work.
