What's in a GH-900 mock paper
Each paper draws its questions per domain in the same proportions GitHub publishes for the real GH-900 — so a mock that goes badly in one domain is telling you something a randomly-drawn quiz couldn't.
| Domain | Official weight | Questions drawn | Share of paper |
|---|---|---|---|
| Understand Git and GitHub basics | 28% | 17 | 28% |
| Work with GitHub repositories | 14% | 9 | 15% |
| Collaborate using GitHub | 14% | 8 | 13% |
| Apply modern development practices | 14% | 8 | 13% |
| Manage projects with GitHub | 8% | 5 | 8% |
| Understand privacy, security, and administration | 14% | 8 | 13% |
| Explore the GitHub community | 8% | 5 | 8% |
| Total | 100% | 60 | 100% |
What a GH-900 paper is shaped like
Which way this particular paper applies pressure.
The clock
At roughly 1.7 minutes a question, the pacing is comfortable but not generous. You can afford to think on a hard question, and you cannot afford to do it twice. Most candidates finish with time for a second pass if they keep the first pass moving.
The weighting
Understand Git and GitHub basics is the largest domain at 28%, but with 7 domains in play no single one decides the result. A mock score here is usually a fair reflection of overall coverage rather than a verdict on one topic.
The standard
The pass mark is 700 on the 100–1000 scale. Because scaling adjusts for the difficulty of the particular set you were served, there is no fixed number of questions that guarantees it — which is exactly why a single mock result means less than a consistent one.

What trips people up on a GH-900 mock
GH-900 looks easy to anyone who uses GitHub every day, and that is exactly why people slip. Daily use teaches you one way of doing things; the exam asks you to tell apart features that sit side by side — a fork from a template from a clone, an issue from a discussion, Codespaces from the github.dev editor, a branch protection rule from a repository ruleset. When a mock answer feels obvious, check the options again for the near-twin.
Git and GitHub basics is the heaviest domain, and the questions there separate what Git does on your machine from what GitHub adds on top. Commits, branches and history are Git; pull requests, issues, organizations and permissions are GitHub. Many wrong answers credit one with the other.
Copilot is where outdated knowledge costs the most. Plans, agent features and model choice have changed recently, and the exam follows the current skills outline, so revise from the current documentation rather than from what you remember using a year ago.
The administration and security domain rewards knowing who can do what: organization owners versus members versus outside collaborators, repository roles from read to admin, and what two-factor authentication, passkeys and Enterprise Managed Users each change. Read the role named in the question before reading the options.
The smaller domains — project management and the open-source community — are easy to skip and then lose marks on. They are mostly vocabulary: Projects layouts, labels and milestones, Sponsors, InnerSource, the Marketplace. A short focused pass usually lifts them more than another round on the big domains.
