What's in a SY0-801 mock paper
Each paper draws its questions per domain in the same proportions CompTIA publishes for the real SY0-801 — so a mock that goes badly in one domain is telling you something a randomly-drawn quiz couldn't.
| Domain | Official weight | Questions drawn | Share of paper |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Security Concepts | 16% | 14 | 16% |
| Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Attacks | 24% | 22 | 24% |
| Security Architecture | 19% | 17 | 19% |
| Security Operations | 27% | 24 | 27% |
| Security Program Management and Oversight | 14% | 13 | 14% |
| Total | 100% | 90 | 100% |
What a SY0-801 paper is shaped like
Which way this particular paper applies pressure.
The clock
At roughly 1 minute a question, this is one of the faster papers you can sit. There is no time to deliberate: you read, decide, and move. Candidates who fail this format usually knew the material and ran out of clock, so treat pacing as a skill to rehearse in its own right rather than something that will sort itself out on the day.
The weighting
Security Operations is the largest domain at 27%, but with 5 domains in play no single one decides the result. A mock score here is usually a fair reflection of overall coverage rather than a verdict on one topic.
The standard
The pass mark of 750 on the 100–900 scale is at the stricter end. Treat a mock result that lands just over the line as a fail in disguise — the margin you want before booking is wider here than on a 100–900 exam that passes lower.

What trips people up on a CompTIA Security+ mock
The real exam mixes multiple-choice items with performance-based questions, interactive tasks such as placing controls on a diagram or reading a log, and those tend to come early and eat time. A mock made of multiple-choice items cannot reproduce them, so practise the habit they need instead: when one stalls you, flag it, answer the quick items, and come back. Candidates who fight a task to the end often find the clock, not their knowledge, decides the result.
Most items are short scenarios that end in "best" or "most likely", and more than one option is usually defensible. The skill being tested is choosing the control or response that fits the stated constraint (cost, speed, least disruption, evidence preservation), not spotting the one true statement. If you keep missing items you could argue for, reread the last sentence of the stem: the deciding constraint is nearly always there.
CompTIA uses its own vocabulary precisely, and the objectives list is the dictionary. Control categories and types, the incident-response phases and the risk terms all have exact meanings on this paper that differ from how many workplaces use them. A miss on a term you use every day is usually that mismatch, and it is fixed in the notes, not with more questions.
Security operations is the largest domain and the most varied, running from hardening and monitoring through identity and automation to incident response and investigation. A weak score there is rarely one gap, so read its misses by topic before revising. Governance and risk is smaller but formula-driven in places (the loss-expectancy arithmetic, the assessment and audit types), which makes it the most reliably recoverable margin.
This version adds explicit coverage of threats against and from AI systems, and older study material says nothing about it. If your mocks show that topic trailing while everything else is steady, the cause is almost certainly a resource gap rather than difficulty, and the lesson closes it quickly.
