Every attempt draws questions you haven't met yet first · Pro.
A full-length paper drawn to the same domain weights, from the questions we rate hardest — the ones that combine two facts or weigh workable options against each other.
One exam domain at the real exam's pace — for the domain your last mock went worst in.
What's in a AZ-305 mock paper
Each paper draws its questions per domain in the same proportions Microsoft Azure publishes for the real AZ-305 — so a mock that goes badly in one domain is telling you something a randomly-drawn quiz couldn't.
| Domain | Official weight | Questions drawn | Share of paper |
|---|---|---|---|
| Design identity, governance, and monitoring solutions | 28% | 14 | 28% |
| Design data storage solutions | 22% | 11 | 22% |
| Design business continuity solutions | 17% | 9 | 18% |
| Design infrastructure solutions | 33% | 16 | 32% |
| Total | 100% | 50 | 100% |
What a AZ-305 paper is shaped like
Which way this particular paper applies pressure.
The clock
At roughly 2 minutes a question, the clock is not the enemy here — the scenarios are. Questions on this paper tend to be longer and more layered, and the time is given to you because you need to read carefully. The failure mode is the opposite of a fast paper: drifting, re-reading, and second-guessing answers you had right the first time.
The weighting
Design infrastructure solutions is the largest domain at 33%, but with 4 domains in play no single one decides the result. A mock score here is usually a fair reflection of overall coverage rather than a verdict on one topic.
The standard
The pass mark is 700 on the 1–1000 scale. Because scaling adjusts for the difficulty of the particular set you were served, there is no fixed number of questions that guarantees it — which is exactly why a single mock result means less than a consistent one.

What trips people up on an AZ-305 mock
AZ-305 is a design exam, not an administration exam. Almost every item gives two or three requirements, such as a recovery point, a budget, a compliance rule, a region or a latency target, and asks you to recommend a service or configuration. The wrong options are real Azure services that would work if one requirement were removed. When you review a miss, find the requirement the option you picked fails. That habit fixes more marks than learning another feature list.
Candidates coming from AZ-104 tend to answer the question "how would I build this" when the exam asks "what should be built". They know how to configure a vault, a gateway or a database, then lose marks choosing between a zone-redundant and a geo-redundant design, or between Azure SQL Database, SQL Managed Instance and SQL Server on a VM. If your misses are mostly wrong-tier or wrong-scope choices rather than unknown services, practise comparing options side by side, not deploying them.
Infrastructure is the largest domain and the widest one: compute, application architecture, migrations and networking all sit inside it. Within it, messaging and networking cause the most repeat errors. Service Bus, Event Grid, Event Hubs and Queue Storage solve different problems, and so do Front Door, Application Gateway, Traffic Manager and Load Balancer. Learn the one property that separates each pair, such as ordering, replay, global or regional, layer 4 or layer 7. Most of these items then become a single elimination.
Business continuity questions turn on recovery objectives. Read the RPO and RTO first, then check whether the scenario needs a second region or only zone resilience, and whether it protects against deletion as well as an outage. Backup protects against deletion and corruption, replication protects against an outage, and many designs need both. A mock that keeps sending you to the wrong one of the two shows exactly which lesson to reread.
Several Azure services in older AZ-305 courses have retired or are retiring, among them the Log Analytics agent, Azure AD B2C for new customers, Azure Blueprints, the Basic Load Balancer SKU and the Azure Cache for Redis tiers. The mocks follow the current outline and current product names. When a retired product appears, it is a distractor. A miss on one usually means your study resource is out of date, and the current Microsoft Learn page fixes it quickly.
