What's in a AI-901 mock paper
Each paper draws its questions per domain in the same proportions Microsoft Azure publishes for the real AI-901 — so a mock that goes badly in one domain is telling you something a randomly-drawn quiz couldn't.
| Domain | Official weight | Questions drawn | Share of paper |
|---|---|---|---|
| Identify AI concepts and capabilities | 42% | 19 | 42% |
| Implement AI solutions by using Microsoft Foundry | 58% | 26 | 58% |
| Total | 100% | 45 | 100% |
What a AI-901 paper is shaped like
Which way this particular paper applies pressure.
The clock
At roughly 1 minute a question, this is one of the faster papers you can sit. There is no time to deliberate: you read, decide, and move. Candidates who fail this format usually knew the material and ran out of clock, so treat pacing as a skill to rehearse in its own right rather than something that will sort itself out on the day.
The weighting
The weighting is top-heavy: Implement AI solutions by using Microsoft Foundry alone accounts for 58% of the paper. That concentration cuts both ways on a mock — a bad run in that one domain will sink the whole score, and a good one can flatter you into thinking the rest is covered. Read the per-domain breakdown before you read the total.
The standard
The pass mark is 700 on the 100–1000 scale. Because scaling adjusts for the difficulty of the particular set you were served, there is no fixed number of questions that guarantees it — which is exactly why a single mock result means less than a consistent one.
Pacing a AI-901 paper
Where you need to be on the clock, quarter by quarter.
| Checkpoint | Elapsed | Be at question | Questions left |
|---|---|---|---|
| First quarter | 11 min | 11 | 34 |
| Halfway | 23 min | 23 | 22 |
| Three quarters | 34 min | 34 | 11 |
| Time called | 45 min | 45 | 0 |
What trips people up on an AI-901 mock
AI-901 is not the old AI-900 with a new number. More than half of the paper is about building things in Microsoft Foundry — deploying a model, prompting it, wiring up a small chat or agent client, and calling speech, vision and Content Understanding — so candidates who revise only AI concepts and service names meet a mock that feels like a different exam.
The hands-on domain is written at Fundamentals depth, but it still expects you to read a few lines of Python and recognise what an SDK call or configuration value does. If code is unfamiliar, the misses cluster there; a short session reading the official quickstarts usually fixes more of them than another pass through the theory.
Product names have moved recently, and the mocks use the names in the current skills outline. A wrong answer is often a right idea attached to an outdated or neighbouring service name, so when you review, check the name as well as the concept.
The concepts domain looks easy and is not free marks. Responsible AI items hinge on telling six principles apart — fairness from inclusiveness, transparency from accountability — and model questions hinge on matching a capability to a model type or deployment setting. Read every option before choosing.
Like every Microsoft Fundamentals paper, the clock is short: roughly a minute per question. Rehearse that pace on a full mock, so a cluster of code-reading questions near the end does not catch you out.
