What's in a AI-103 mock paper
Each paper draws its questions per domain in the same proportions Microsoft Azure publishes for the real AI-103 — so a mock that goes badly in one domain is telling you something a randomly-drawn quiz couldn't.
| Domain | Official weight | Questions drawn | Share of paper |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plan and manage an Azure AI solution | 28% | 14 | 28% |
| Implement generative AI and agentic solutions | 33% | 17 | 34% |
| Implement computer vision solutions | 13% | 7 | 14% |
| Implement text analysis solutions | 13% | 6 | 12% |
| Implement information extraction solutions | 13% | 6 | 12% |
| Total | 100% | 50 | 100% |
What a AI-103 paper is shaped like
Which way this particular paper applies pressure.
The clock
At roughly 2.4 minutes a question, the clock is not the enemy here — the scenarios are. Questions on this paper tend to be longer and more layered, and the time is given to you because you need to read carefully. The failure mode is the opposite of a fast paper: drifting, re-reading, and second-guessing answers you had right the first time.
The weighting
Implement generative AI and agentic solutions is the largest domain at 33%, but with 5 domains in play no single one decides the result. A mock score here is usually a fair reflection of overall coverage rather than a verdict on one topic.
The standard
The pass mark is 700 on the 100–1000 scale. Because scaling adjusts for the difficulty of the particular set you were served, there is no fixed number of questions that guarantees it — which is exactly why a single mock result means less than a consistent one.
Pacing a AI-103 paper
Where you need to be on the clock, quarter by quarter.
| Checkpoint | Elapsed | Be at question | Questions left |
|---|---|---|---|
| First quarter | 30 min | 13 | 37 |
| Halfway | 60 min | 25 | 25 |
| Three quarters | 90 min | 38 | 12 |
| Time called | 120 min | 50 | 0 |
What trips people up on an AI-103 mock
AI-103 is a building exam, and most wrong answers on a mock are real Microsoft Foundry features used for the wrong job. Retrieval-augmented generation versus fine-tuning, hybrid versus pure vector search, a guardrail versus an evaluator, an agent tool versus an instruction in the system prompt — the distractors all exist, so knowing what each one is for matters more than knowing that it exists.
Agents carry the heaviest weight, and agent questions turn on control: which tools an agent may call, when a human must approve a call, what it remembers between conversations, and how several agents hand work to each other. If your misses cluster here, revise the configuration settings that enforce those limits rather than the concepts behind them.
Expect short Python snippets. They test whether you recognise the right client, call or parameter, not whether you can write a program from scratch — but a candidate who has only read about Foundry and never connected an app to a project tends to lose these marks.
Retrieval questions reward precision about the pipeline: how content is chunked, embedded and indexed, which search mode a requirement calls for, and which identity needs which role for keyless access. Draw the path from document to grounded answer once, and many of these questions become obvious.
Names have changed quickly in this area. Mocks use the names in the current skills outline, so a miss can be a right idea attached to an outdated product name — check the name as well as the concept when you review.
