What's in a DEA-C01 mock paper
Each paper draws its questions per domain in the same proportions AWS publishes for the real DEA-C01 — so a mock that goes badly in one domain is telling you something a randomly-drawn quiz couldn't.
| Domain | Official weight | Questions drawn | Share of paper |
|---|---|---|---|
| Data Ingestion and Transformation | 34% | 22 | 34% |
| Data Store Management | 26% | 17 | 26% |
| Data Operations and Support | 22% | 14 | 22% |
| Data Security and Governance | 18% | 12 | 18% |
| Total | 100% | 65 | 100% |
What a DEA-C01 paper is shaped like
Which way this particular paper applies pressure.
The clock
At roughly 2 minutes a question, the clock is not the enemy here — the scenarios are. Questions on this paper tend to be longer and more layered, and the time is given to you because you need to read carefully. The failure mode is the opposite of a fast paper: drifting, re-reading, and second-guessing answers you had right the first time.
The weighting
Data Ingestion and Transformation is the largest domain at 34%, but with 4 domains in play no single one decides the result. A mock score here is usually a fair reflection of overall coverage rather than a verdict on one topic.
The standard
The pass mark is 720 on the 100–1000 scale. Because scaling adjusts for the difficulty of the particular set you were served, there is no fixed number of questions that guarantees it — which is exactly why a single mock result means less than a consistent one.

What trips people up on a DEA-C01 mock
Ingestion and transformation is the largest domain by a clear margin, and it is where the paper concentrates its hardest questions. They are rarely about whether you know a service exists — they are about which of several services that could move the data is the right one given a stated constraint on latency, volume, cost or ordering. Learn the boundaries between the overlapping options rather than the options themselves.
Data-store questions reward knowing access patterns rather than feature lists. The exam repeatedly asks you to match a described query shape to a storage choice, so a mock that goes badly here usually means the underlying model of "what is this store good at" is missing, not that a fact was forgotten.
Governance and security carry the smallest weight but are the most self-contained material on the syllabus, which makes them the most efficient thing to fix between a failed mock and a retake.
Operations and support is the domain most often neglected, because it is about running pipelines rather than building them — orchestration, failure handling, monitoring and cost control. It is also the domain where the questions are most concrete, so it repays targeted study more predictably than the larger ingestion domain does.
Before booking, check that your mock results are not being carried by the ingestion domain alone. Because it is the largest slice, a strong run there can lift an overall score past the line while two smaller domains sit well under it — a profile that passes a mock and fails the real thing on a different draw.
